What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller (Construction / Mechanical Industry) position at Select Search Group?
We’re hiring a hands-on Controller for a growing mechanical contractor in Eastern North Carolina. This role reports directly to the CEO and will own the entire accounting and finance functions for the company. To be considered, a prior background in construction accounting or a related field is required. This role is 100% on-site.
What You’ll Own
- Full accounting operations: AP, AR, payroll, GL
- Monthly/annual close and financial reporting
- Job costing, WIP, and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Cash flow, working capital, and banking relationships
- Bonding/surety relationships and financial reporting to support projects
- Federal contract compliance (certified payroll, prevailing wage)
- Building and leading a small internal finance team
- Upgrading systems, processes, and controls
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 10 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including leadership roles (Controller, Director, etc.)
- 5–10 years of experience within construction, mechanical contracting, or a related trades-based industry
- Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Experience managing bonding/surety and banking relationships
- Familiarity with federal contracting requirements, including certified payroll and compliance
- Experience with construction accounting systems (e.g., Deltek, Sage, Viewpoint, ComputerEase are preferred)
- Proven ability to lead teams and operate both strategically and hands-on
