Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Low Voltage Mechanical Design Engineer. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years of experience designing low voltage (LV) switchboards, panelboards, or related electrical equipment. Proficiency in 3D modeling software (Autodesk Inventor or equivalent) and AutoCAD 2D is required.
This role involves close collaboration with engineering and production teams to develop practical, manufacturable designs, provide hands-on factory support, and contribute to product improvement initiatives. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to meet project deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Location
This position is based on-site at our Addison, Illinois facility and requires presence in the factory five days per week to collaborate directly with production, engineering, supply chain, and quality teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical layouts and assemblies for low voltage switchboards, panelboards, and control enclosures
- Create and revise detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using Autodesk Inventor (or equivalent) and AutoCAD
- Collaborate with electrical engineers to ensure proper mechanical-electrical integration, including device mounting, wireway routing, and accessibility
- Provide hands-on factory floor support to resolve fit, assembly, and manufacturability issues
- Support continuous improvement and cost-reduction initiatives through design optimization
- Ensure designs comply with UL standards, customer specifications, and internal manufacturing processes
- Troubleshoot design and fabrication challenges using strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Maintain accurate documentation, revision control, and drawing standards
- Manage time effectively to support project schedules, including submittal drawings, BOM releases, and production deadlines
- Communicate effectively across departments to ensure smooth execution from design through production
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Minimum 2 years of experience with low voltage switchgear, switchboards, or panelboard design
- Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, or similar 3D CAD software
- Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD 2D drafting
- Experience with PDM systems and ERP-integrated engineering environments
- Solid understanding of low voltage equipment construction and enclosure design
- Working knowledge of UL standards (UL 891, UL 67, UL 508A) and applicable NEC requirements
- Familiarity with busbar design, bracing, and thermal considerations for LV applications
- Understanding of component layout, spacing, heat dissipation, and accessibility requirements
- Experience with enclosure fabrication including sheet metal design, bends, fasteners, and hardware selection
- Strong communication skills with a high level of ownership and accountability
- Detail-oriented mindset with a focus on quality and manufacturability
