What are the responsibilities and job description for the PIC Test Engineer position at Seer?
PIC Test Engineer (Silicon / Silicon Nitride)
About the Role
A confidential photonics-focused organisation is seeking an entry-level PIC Test Engineer to support testing and characterisation of silicon and silicon-nitride photonic integrated circuits (PICs).
You will work closely with senior test, design, and fabrication engineers to execute optical and electrical measurements, support automated test flows, and help ensure the quality and reliability of next-generation PIC technologies.
Responsibilities
- Perform wafer-level, die-level, and packaged-PIC testing on silicon and SiN devices.
- Operate optical test benches including tunable lasers, fibre-alignment stages, power meters, photodiodes, and OSAs.
- Carry out standard characterisation: insertion loss, transmission spectra, coupling efficiency, resonator response, and basic device functionality tests.
- Assist in test automation scripts, measurement routines, and data organisation.
- Maintain laboratory setups, ensuring alignment, calibration, and clean operation.
- Document measurement results, compile reports, and communicate findings to design and fabrication teams.
- Support troubleshooting of test anomalies related to alignment, packaging, or fabrication variations.
Requirements
- Academic or Industry experience in PIC testing, optical labs, semiconductor testing, or related hands-on roles (internships welcome).
- Familiarity with silicon or silicon-nitride photonics, integrated optics, or optical communications.
- Basic experience with optical instruments such as tunable lasers, OSAs, photodiodes, fibre-alignment stages, or optical power meters.
- Understanding of key PIC measurements: IL, ER, spectra, coupling, and resonator behaviour (coursework or lab experience acceptable).
- Exposure to scripting/automation (Python/Matlab/LabVIEW) is beneficial but not required; willingness to learn is essential.
- Strong attention to detail and careful, methodical lab habits.
- Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative engineering environment.
- A strong desire to build technical depth in PIC test and characterisation.
