What are the responsibilities and job description for the Skilled Farm Hand - Mixed Crop Production Ninja position at Seed and Soil?
**You're a damn warrior** - You show up on time and lead the crew in calisthenics and stretches before attacking the day. Core strength, duh, you've obviously been training all winter for this.
YOU ARE A FARMER - It's an attitude. You see the whole picture. You have a dream farm. You have been inspired by dirt and the life it holds, you have wept on drives through featureless monocultures of corn. You don't stop learning.
_This is not your first rodeo_ "but I kind of want it to be" Great! you're perfect. And don't worry, we come at this thing from a weird angle. Seeds pay a lot of the bills around here, and we also do a lot of value-add in house. You should be as comfortable talking to customers at markets and popups as you are spreading hay mulch all day wearing a respirator (ppe is NOT optional here). But if you've not done mixed vegetable production or something damn similar, sorry, this is not a good fit.
Responsibilities
- Propagation, planting, cultivating, irrigation assembly, and harvesting a variety of crops using both manual tools and heavy machinery. We have two tractors and two hand carts. I'm looking to make that three hand carts. Let's get it y'all.
- You really need to understand a spreadsheet. I know school wasn't everyone's strong suit, and I can flex a little on this, but if you can use a google sheet and use it well, well that's lovely... like really lovely. We have a sophisticated plant breeding program running, and being oblivious to some of the back end will result in mistakes. You gotta be sharp.
- Hand work. You're a beast, we already covered this. You need to be strong and fast with hand tools. I expect a combined 500 hours under your belt on a rake, shovel, hoe, and fork. Minimum. Stick around for a season and we'll work on doubling that.
- Attitude Setting. Everyone creates the attitude on the team, and it really matters on a crew like this. Its fun to go hard, eat well, go hard again, and chat without stopping workflow. Self care (drinking water, taking mindful breaks, etc) is part of this.
I won't bore you with any AI generated drivel, I expect professionalism as much as the next guy, but I don't phrase it in the same dry boring way. Because we're not a dry boring farm. Please introduce yourself in writing to apply. I will want to connect by phone and go from there.
