Seed & Soil produces herb, flower, vegetable, and cannabis seeds and plants that are selected for resilience and hardiness in the Maine outdoors. We use our two recreational (aka Adult Use) Cultivation Licenses, a tier 4 and a nursery, to grow about 1 ⁄ 2 acre of cannabis for seed production and breeding. An important byproduct of our breeding and seed production is fresh frozen and dried cannabis biomass for extraction within the adult use market in Maine. Our vegetable operation is geared towards seed production as well. The ideal candidate will have 2 years non-cannabis farming experience, enjoy physical labor, and be a good communicator. This team member will be responsible for executing specific duties related to planting, tending to crops, harvesting, seed cleaning, record keeping, and seed packaging after being given proper guidance. Seasonally, there are off farm delivery opportunities but primarily work is done at our farm in Monroe. This is a starting position but employees that demonstrate drive and have management experience will have the opportunity to grow into a management position. We are a ma and pop business, we are really small, and young but growing, we are looking to build a team that wants to grow with us for years to come.

Requirements

• Must be able and willing to work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
• Athleticism, strength, endurance, and agility; Farming is athletic. Work will be physically demanding at times, frequent bending and crouching, ability to lift and carry crops, tools, sandbags etc. that may be heavy. Ideal employees will value health and wellness.
• Cannabis can be a skin irritant, be prepared to wear clothing that covers skin during harvest.
• Employees cannot use tick repellents that contain pesticides (ex: deet, permethrins) on their skin or clothing. (Trace amounts can be magnified in extraction and cause batches to fail mandatory pesticide testing.)
• Reliable transportation to and from the farm in Monroe is required.
• Interest or experience in small carpentry, operating a tractor, and assembling drip irrigation systems is helpful.
• This work is detail oriented, good communication skills are essential. Employees are expected to listen carefully to instructions and ask clarifying questions. The ideal candidate will be interested in why we do things, ask questions, offer ideas, and be able to accept constructive feedback.
• Following instructions is necessary but not sufficient in this role. Every task builds toward a project, often a complex breeding project. For this reason we expect this employee to grasp the “big picture”

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Plant, inspect, and harvest crops
• Irrigate crops and assist with irrigation and fertigation
• Operate and service farm machinery and tools
• Move plants with wheelbarrows or tractors
• Performing general labor outdoors and moving heavy loads
• Understanding and Adhering to Office of Cannabis Policy regulations
• Interacting with suppliers, customers, and vendors to manage inventory; This includes assisting in the nursery retail location to sell cannabis seeds and plants to the public.
• Solid time management skills and a strong work ethic
• Detail-oriented planning ability
• The physical ability to perform demanding farm chores with reasonable accommodations
• Prepare beds for growing, plant, water, prune, weed, trellis and tend to the plants
• Keeping the field orderly and visually legible - weed whacking or scything when appropriate. Picking up trash and putting away tools at the end of use. Having an eye for pathways and maintaining them, free of safety hazards.

Qualifications:

• Tractor Experience (desired)
• 2 Years or more Farming Experience
• Good Communication Skills
• Ability to bend, crouch, work on knees, lift, often repeatedly for hours at a time.
• Attention to detail; inspecting for insects, disease, and other plant needs.

Schedule

Flexible, starting part time, but after 90 day review full time year round employment is available for someone with competent computer skills and willingness to learn computer based administrative tasks. Harvest season (Late September - Early November) 40 hours per week are available to all employees. From July 15th through August 25th, there is a 7am/7pm chore that we may require assistance with so workers’ schedules may vary to include early mornings, weekends, and holidays. Workday typically 6 hours, can shift with weather.

Compensation

During a 90 day on-the-job review, candidates will be compensated $22/hr as independent contractors and work schedule will be set weekly. Based on performance during this period, and past experience, education, and competencies, a year-round salary is negotiable.

IIC Card (Required) to obtain must have no felonies within the last 10 years and be US Citizen. It takes one month from beginning the application to receiving the license.
