JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for serving as a credit leader and player‑coach overseeing a team of Commercial Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts while maintaining a moderate personal portfolio and underwriting workload. This role is accountable for credit quality, risk oversight, portfolio health, and talent development for C&I and Private Wealth focused lending (primary), as well as CRE exposure (secondary) in the Dallas market. The Commercial Credit Team Lead acts as a senior credit partner to Relationship Managers and Credit Administration leaders, ensuring consistent application of credit standards, sound underwriting judgment, disciplined portfolio management, and alignment with the Bank’s risk appetite and strategic objectives. The role emphasizes leadership, judgment, and institutionalization of credit risk and client knowledge, rather than volume‑driven underwriting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Team Leadership and Development (25%)
- Leads, mentors, and develops a team of Portfolio Managers (PMs) and Credit Analysts (Analysts) by providing consistent day-to-day coaching and technical guidance to strengthen individual and team capabilities while maintaining an active personal underwriting workload.
- Acts as a strategic partner and subject matter expert for Relationship Managers (RMs), PMs, Analysts and other internal stakeholders/partners.
- Leads deal team credit screening/structuring discussions in partnership with RMs and PMs.
- Models best‑in‑class underwriting practices through direct involvement in complex or high‑profile credit requests.
- Manages workflow, makes portfolio assignments, assigns credit requests, and ensures timely completion of underwriting and portfolio monitoring activities.
- Serves as the primary deal team partner for escalation of credit questions, issues, and direction prior to engaging with Loan Committee or the Director of Credit Administration.
Deal Evaluation, Structuring, Advising, Credit Underwriting and Portfolio Management (20%)
- Provides hands-on leadership and guidance in overseeing the analysis, underwriting, and risk management of the Dallas market conventional portfolios, while ensuring strict adherence to credit policies and regulatory compliance.
- Directly manages a portfolio of credit clients and independently underwrites more complex C&I and CRE credit requests as needed.
- Collaborates with deal team members to evaluate, advise, and structure, new, existing, and complex credit opportunities.
- Takes high level accountability for portfolio wide monitoring activities, including annual reviews, covenant tracking, and early warning identification.
- Helps define the portfolio’s vision, strategic fit, and risk/return profile.
- Leads Dallas market asset quality presentations in monthly asset quality meetings for covered portfolios.
- Ensures market underwriting, loan documentation, deal structures, and ongoing monitoring are consistent with bank expectations, appetite, and policy.
Loan Documentation Negotiation and Review (20%)
- In partnership with the deal team, leads the outside counsel documentation process including selection of appropriate attorneys, review and negotiate loan documents, ensuring consistency with approvals and prudent evaluation of documentation risk.
- Provides expertise and assist RMs, PMs, and analysts on legal documentation related items.
- Partners with internal and external counsel and loan operations to resolve client requests and internal/external issues.
- Resolves escalated issues working with Loan Assistants and Loan Operations Staff to navigate through closing processes and ensure compliance with bank operations and credit standards.
- Reviews and opinions on term sheets and commitment letters.
Credit Approval, Review, and Recommendation (15%)
- Acts as a first line credit approver and day to day credit approval liaison for the C&I team authority.
- Exercises Level 2 approval authority on credit requests.
- Reviews Opportunity Assessment and Credit Memos prior to approval/submission to Loan Committee and/or the Director of Credit Administration.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration (10%)
- Works closely with RMs, operations, treasury management, credit administration, and senior credit leadership to support portfolio quality and revenue growth.
- Participates in credit committee discussions and presents complex credit requests as needed.
- Provides training and guidance to internal partners on credit best practices.
Process Improvement and Strategic Contribution (10%)
- Identifies opportunities to enhance underwriting & portfolio management efficiency, credit quality, and portfolio management processes and composition.
- Contributes to policy updates, workflow enhancements, and technology improvements.
- Supports strategic initiatives related to lending growth, risk management, and operational excellence.
Performs other duties as required and assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Expert knowledge and understanding of conventional (C&I and CRE) lending, underwriting, credit policy and procedures, and is able to accurately risk-rate loans/credits, evaluates both cash-flow and collateral-based loans/credits.
- Demonstrated ability to balance hands-on underwriting with team leadership responsibilities.
- Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply Bank policies and procedures in the work environment.
- Ability to protect and maintain confidential client and proprietary information.

- Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and ability to learn various job-related software.
- Ability to complete required compliance training by assigned due date.
- Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance.
EDUCATION*
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Banking, Finance, Mathematics, or relevant field required
- Completion of a bank or third-party formal credit training preferred.
EXPERIENCE*
- Minimum of 7 years of credit analysis experience required.
- Prior experience leading a team preferred.
