Position Overview
Position Overview
The System Engineering Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory is seeking a Technical Writer with strong technical writing experience, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a dynamic engineering environment. The successful candidate will develop, maintain, and manage system-level documentation, assembly and test procedures, technical reports, presentations, web content, and wiki documentation.
This role requires close collaboration with technicians, engineers, program managers, and interdisciplinary teams to create clear, accurate, and user-friendly documentation that meets rigorous engineering and government standards.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including assembly procedures, test procedures, manuals, plans, reports, and system-level documentation.
  • Create, edit, and manage technical content for engineering and fabrication environments.
  • Work with engineers, technicians, and program managers to identify documentation requirements and develop effective solutions.
  • Prepare documentation using photos, diagrams, tables, technical illustrations, and graphical content.
  • Create and maintain content for web pages and wikis.
  • Assist with preparation of stakeholder presentations, reports, and technical materials, including content aggregation and graphical design.
  • Participate in project team meetings, reviews, and documentation discussions.
  • Maintain document configuration control and ensure accuracy of released documentation.
  • Support digital engineering initiatives, including Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools.
  • Perform technical editing, proofreading, and content management activities.
Required Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in technical writing.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience creating and maintaining technical documentation.
  • Experience writing manuals, test plans, and procedures in engineering-based environments.
  • Experience with program/project management or analysis activities.
  • Experience creating presentations for stakeholders, including content aggregation.
  • Experience with document management and configuration control.
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including:
    • Microsoft Word
    • Microsoft PowerPoint
    • Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with Adobe software, including:
    • Adobe Acrobat
    • Adobe InDesign
  • Experience with presentation design, poster design, document design, technical illustrations, and photo manipulation.
  • Experience composing test procedures.
  • Experience creating and maintaining web pages and wiki content.
Communication Skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret Clearance or higher clearance.
  • Background in science and/or technology.
  • Experience writing hardware documentation.
  • Experience with digital engineering methods.
  • Experience with single sourcing and component content management.
  • Experience with LaTeX editing.
  • Experience working with Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools.
Work Environment
  • Onsite position requiring presence at the facility 5 days per week, with flexibility for occasional remote work.
  • Dynamic engineering environment where design modifications and documentation requirements are continuously evolving.
Clearance Requirements
  • Interim Secret Clearance is sufficient to start.
  • Preference given to candidates with an active Secret Clearance.
  • Position will eventually require a TS-level clearance.
Interview Process
  • Initial phone or Zoom screening with the hiring manager.
  • Second-round onsite interview with a larger group interview panel.

Salary : $65 - $70
