POSITION TITLE:          Assistant Coach

STATUS:                         Stipend

REPORTS TO:                 Building Principal, Athletic Director, Head Coach

 

POSITION SUMMARY: The coach is responsible for supporting the academic, athletic, and personal development of student-athletes. This includes fostering skill development, promoting sportsmanship, emphasizing discipline, and creating a safe and inclusive team environment aligned with district policies and MSHSAA guidelines. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Instruct student-athletes in sport-specific skills, strategies, and physical conditioning.
  2. Promote character development, leadership, teamwork, and respect.
  3. Serve as a positive role model consistent with school and district expectations.
  4. Monitor academic progress and support student-athlete eligibility requirements.
  5. Plan, organize, and conduct structured practices throughout the season.
  6. Develop game strategies and supervise athletes during contests.
  7. Coordinate scheduling of games, transportation, and facilities with the Athletic Director.
  8. Supervise athletes before, during, and after practices and competitions.
  9. Ensure compliance with all district policies and Missouri State High School Activities Association rules and regulations.
  10. Maintain accurate records, including attendance, eligibility, physicals, and insurance documentation.
  11. Communicate effectively with players, parents, administration, and staff.
  12. Attend required meetings, clinics, and professional development sessions.
  13. Ensure the safety and proper supervision of all student-athletes.
  14. Inspect and maintain equipment, uniforms, and facilities.
  15. Enforce health and safety protocols, including concussion awareness and emergency procedures.
  16. Recommend and manage equipment, uniforms, and supply needs within budget guidelines.
  17. Assist in program development, including youth outreach and offseason activities (if applicable).
  18. Support multi-level programs (freshman, JV, varsity) and collaborate with other coaches.
  19. Enforce discipline and sportsmanlike behavior in accordance with school standards.
  20. Establish clear expectations and consequences for student conduct.
  21. Promote equity, inclusion, and respect among all participants.
  22. Maintain appropriate professional relationship and boundaries with students in accordance with district policies and state guidelines.
  23. Use appropriate communication methods and adhere to district expectations regarding electronic communication and social media interactions with students and families.
  24. Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Principal or Athletic Director.

 

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  1. Understanding of sport-specific skills, rules, and strategies, with the ability to plan and deliver effective practices for diverse skill levels.
  2. Ability to motivate, mentor, and model positive behavior while promoting teamwork, discipline, and character.
  3. Effective communication with students, parents, staff, and administration; ability to work collaboratively within the athletic program.
  4. Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to make sound decisions in dynamic situations.
  5. Ability to supervise student-athletes, maintain a safe environment, and uphold district policies and Missouri State High School Activities Association standards.

 

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: 

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Previous coaching experience preferred (high school or equivalent level).
  3. Knowledge of sport-specific rules, techniques, and training methods.
  4. Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, and community members.
  5. Maintain certifications as required by district or state (e.g., CPR/AED, first aid, concussion training).

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

 

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, and use hands to handle or operate objects, tools, or controls. The position requires frequent mobility and active supervision of students. The employee may occasionally be required to reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and may occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Duties are performed in both indoor and outdoor settings, with exposure to varying weather conditions, noise levels, and activity environments consistent with athletic events and practices. The position requires work during evenings, weekends, and extended hours during the athletic season, including travel to off-site events. The employee must be able to board and exit school transportation and supervise students in these settings. The role involves moderate to strenuous physical activity, including demonstrating athletic techniques, running drills, and responding quickly to dynamic situations.
