What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tooling Engineer position at Seaway Plastics?
Purpose: Drive new injection mold tooling from the concept to completion & support existing production tooling. This individual will be responsible for tools built internally and externally, performing DFM activities, overseeing tool design acceptance, maintaining schedules and problem solving through the life of the tool.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Sustain production tooling, driving tooling repairs and improvements.
- Aids in developing quotes for new tooling, revisions, and repairs.
- Responsible for storing CAD files, customer prints, and related documents.
- Drive new tooling through the entire development phase.
- Perform Design & DFM activities and engage with customers to work through these issues.
- Modify CAD files and communicate DFM issues using SharePoint, Web Meetings and PowerPoint’s.
- Determine gate locations, ejector pin locations, document parting line locations, inserts required, actions required, etc.
- Perform mold flow analysis as required.
- Oversee and approve mold designs (both internal and external).
- Work with customers to obtain documented design approval when applicable.
- Document and resolve tooling issues while pushing for production approval.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the manager.
Qualifications and Skill Requirements:
- High School Diploma/GED required.
- The ideal candidate is an experienced tooling engineer with a strong background in tool design and troubleshooting plastic injection molds. However, we will strongly consider any individual with 5 years in designing plastic injection tooling.
- Candidates with a Mechanical Engineering degree, 2-year mechanical design degree, or trade school preferred with an emphasis on mold making.
- 5 years of experience in the plastic injection molding industry.
- Maintains a positive attitude and readily adapts to changes necessary to support the business.
- Demonstrates and drives Seaway’s culture.
- Keen awareness of and background in plastic, silicone & cleanroom injection molding
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; Competent written, verbal, and presentation skills; Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, & PowerPoint.
- Solve practical problems. Uses limited information regarding molding parameters and tool design to develop action plans and solve technical problems.
- Strong working knowledge and proficient using multiple CAD software for 3D file manipulation. Experience in Cimatron, SolidWorks, Creo (Pro Engineer) and Autodesk Mold Flow is preferred, however candidates with experience in other CAD software will also be considered.
- Able to manage multiple projects and meet defined deliverables.
- Understanding of scientific molding & validation processes is a plus (DOE, IQ, OQ, PQ).
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs unaided.
