Seattle Gay News (SGN) is the third-oldest LGBTQIA newspaper in the United States, founded in 1974. With over 51 years of continuous operations, the publication releases monthly in-print issues with distribution across Seattle and around the Pacific Northwest. With a rapidly growing social media presence of over 13K followers on its Instagram and TikTok platforms, the SGN is offering two unpaid part-time (10-15 hours/week) internships for the Fall 2025 to assist up-and-coming journalism students gain useful experience in the field and help them apply for scholarships.
Job Responsibilities:
- Help manage the company’s social media accounts and post content.
- Work closely with SGN editors to brainstorm content ideas, assisting in scheduled projects.
- Monitor various social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
- Analyze analytics to gauge success of content.
- Assist in the creation of promotional materials and video editing.
- (Optional) Report in the field with editors and other SGN team members to cover events.
- Attend weekly meetings with assigned SGN editor to discuss progress and receive constructive feedback.
Program Overview: This position is part-time (10-15 hours/week) and hybrid/remote flexible. Social Media Interns will report directly to either the Managing or Associate Editor, meeting weekly to receive assignments, troubleshoot issues, discuss progress, and evaluate their content's performance. Successful interns at the end of their program will have gained valuable experience working within a small team of passionate LGBTQIA journalists, created a portfolio of 3-5 work samples (social media posts), receive a letter of recommendation, and be offered assistance with applying for LGBTQIA journalism scholarships.
Qualifications / Skills:

- Professionalism and flexibility in a face-paced, newsroom setting
Education / Experience Requirements:
- 3rd or 4th year undergraduate or graduate program; preferably in Journalism or related field
- Prior newspaper or other media experience preferred, but not required
