As a Student Success Specialist, you will be a key member of a team that delivers quality, accessible academic advising to our diverse student body.

The Student Success Specialist - Entry and Transition Advising is a full-time, exempt position in the Student Services Division of South Seattle College (SSC). The Student Success Specialist reports to the Director of Advising and Running Start and is embedded in The Welcome Center. Delivers academic advising services for new, transitional, and undecided students. This position will aim to support underrepresented students in higher education by focusing on first year student success strategies and program exploration interventions for undecided and transitional students.

This is an on-campus, in-person role with some options for occasional remote work.

What you will be working on:
Collaborate with South's Welcome Center to deliver first quarter enrollment advising for incoming students to the college. Be knowledgeable of South's programs and graduation requirements, college policies and procedures. Advise students on course placement, score interpretation, and introductory course pathways. Assist students with course selection and the development of individualized educational plans. Advise students concerning college transfer and professional/technical programs, degree, and transfer requirements. Manage an academic advising caseload of undecided/exploratory students in their first one to two quarters, supporting each student in confirming their academic pathway by the end of their second quarter with a warm hand-off to their Area of Study Advisor. Manage a caseload of students in Transitional Studies programs, facilitating a smooth transition into college coursework, including the graduation process for HS21 students. Represent Advising in interdepartmental work aligned with Transitional Services (ESL, GED, ABE, and High School 21 ). Create and maintain advising resources related to the support of transitional students. Assist in the creation, coordination, and delivery of advising communications and programming aimed at supporting prospective and undecided students of color. Track, report and assess activities, including participation, retention, and completion rates. Develop and implement interventions for undecided students, making appropriate referrals for students need of career counseling and/or program exploration. Collaborate on the research and development of student success educational guides and tools which encourage a strong start and progression through college.

What you bring as a candidate: (Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)
Bachelor's degree. Demonstrated experience with working effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds, such as racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic, and diverse physical and learning disabilities. Strong oral, written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills. Experience with academic advising for college and/or high school students in an education focused setting. Experience in higher education or community-based organizations. Experience and knowledge of college transfer admission, processes and procedures. Experience with Microsoft Office suite. Experience using student and/or customer management database technology. Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, problem-solve and plan for cyclical calendar events and meeting deadlines with being attentive to detail.
