Position Summary

The Diesel and Heavy Duty Equipment instructors are responsible to the Dean of the Automotive and-Diesel Technology Division, and will provide classroom and laboratory instruction for students on a daily basis. Will teach applicable category of maintenance in all facets of heavy duty equipment and diesel including storage batteries, cranking motors, charging systems, EV and HEV systems, motor-generators, ignition systems, lighting systems, dash instrumentation and indicators, HVAC systems, engine performance, drivability diagnosis, on-board electronic control modules and communication networks. Develop student understanding of the principles of operation of these automotive systems and their functions in passenger car, motor vehicles for the performance of diagnostic type tests and troubleshooting. Be proficient in both the operation and teaching advanced diagnoses equipment such as Lab Scope, Diagnostic Scanners, Digital Multi Meter and other diagnostic equipment. Will also instruct in safety, environmental awareness, human relations and leadership, which are integral to the program. Will participate in curriculum development and assist in counseling students, and relations. Work closely with peers to maintain excellence in the program while working on campus committees and support groups and with a technical advisory committee and other professional organizations in the automotive industry. Must be current and stay within the industry, and within the areas of instruction. Current ASE certification is required or should be obtained within 90-days upon hire.

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by AFT-Seattle.

The salary range for part time faculty is $8,164.66 - $12,229.00 for a 5-credit single-class (P2: A1- E7). Please note that all AMT classes have a 15-credit single-class workload per quarter.

  • Teach the range of curriculum for Heavy Equipment & Diesel Technology certificate programs
  • Provide assistance and advice to students regarding their success and eventual employment
  • Participate in department planning and operation
  • Work with other faculty and students to maintain a clean and safe working environment
  • Complete all necessary college paperwork, e.g. registration forms, grade reports, safety reports, etc. in a timely fashion
  • Work with the program's Technical Advisory Committee to maintain strong industry ties, ensure the currency of the curriculum¿ and create employment opportunities for students.
  • May serve on department and campus committees, as appropriate.

What You Bring As a Candidate

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least seven current years¿ experience in the automotive, heavy duty equipment and/or diesel industries.
  • Three of these seven years will be at the journeyman level.
  • Must be able to teach and communicate effectively with students of varying social, cultural and economic backgrounds, and understand the goals and objectives of a comprehensive community college and vocational education.
  • Ability to work with computerized systems.
  • Must be ASE Master Technician Certified or be able to achieve the certification within 90 days of being hired.
