We are seeking safety focused and environmentally concerned Senior Passenger & Tugboat Operator. Operating out of Diablo Lake’s boat landing, the Passenger & Tugboat Operator assists with vessel operations at the Skagit Hydroelectric project. Newhalem, Washington is located 116 miles northeast of Seattle, in a very remote, rural area nestled in the northern Cascade mountain range at one of Washington State’s most beautiful and scenic hydro generating facilities.
Vessel operations include transporting equipment and personnel to Ross Dam, coordinating summer tours, overseeing the coordination of vessel maintenance and implementing safety policies, planning, training. Debris removal is also an important responsibility ensuring safe lake operations for vessel crew and recreational use. The waterways on Diablo Lake are narrow in places and during wind and inclement weather, necessitate a skilled vessel operator to perform duties safely. Vessel types used in lake operations include: two 26’ tugboats, one 40’ tug boat, one 42’ tour boat, 5 fast crew boats with jet propulsion, and many lengths of barges
This position will report to the Generation Supervisor.

Job Responsibilities
Here Is More About What You’ll Be Doing
- Leads and participates in the work of personnel involved in boat operation and maintenance and directs the work of Utility Laborers serving as deckhands.
- Prepares and maintains all records, timesheets, reports, and related paperwork.
- Coordinates use of barges and schedules and assigns work priorities.
- Operates Federally and State inspected passenger vessels carrying up to 70 passengers for hire and takes responsibility for onboard safety equipment, the safety of passengers, crew members and vessels and directs deck crew performance.
- Operates tugboats used to push or tow freight barges and floating structures through narrow channels and is sometimes required to perform such work in heavy currents and winds.
- Ensures proper loading of all vessels and barges and assists crew in loading and handling of freight.
- Tows and maintains log floats, booms and boom lights and collects and assists in the disposal of lake debris.
- Performs pre-departure safety checks and inspects vessels for maintenance problems.
- Collects and maintains account of monies and tickets.
- Will supervise junior captains and deckhands

Work Environment/Physical Demands
- Frequently required to lift objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds.
- Required to work outdoors in all types of weather.
- Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
- Master Inland 100 Gross Tons Captain’s License
- A minimum of 2 years of experience supervising a traditional boat crew
- US Coast Guard Unlimited Master License as a Master Passenger and Towing Vessels.
- Knowledge and ability to ensure safe passenger and freight operations including safety practices, navigation, maintenance, and related regulatory knowledge associated with licensing requirements.
