About the Seamen’s Church Institute

The Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) is North America’s largest mariners’ service agency, with an annual operating budget of more than $8 million. Founded in 1834, SCI provides pastoral care, maritime education and training, and advocacy for the professional mariners who transport billions of tons of cargo each year across the world’s oceans and along our nation’s inland waterways.

Position Summary

As an Instructor with SCI’s Center for Maritime Education (CME), you will train professional mariners in the classroom and on full-mission bridge simulators. You’ll lead training sessions, operate sophisticated simulation systems, evaluate student performance, and provide clear, constructive feedback that helps mariners strengthen their navigation, boat-handling, and decision-making skills.

You’ll also work closely with CME instructors and client companies to develop and deliver customized training exercises and courses. SCI provides the instructor and simulator training you need to succeed in the role.

What You’ll Do

Teach and evaluate mariners.
Lead classroom sessions, simulator briefs, and debriefs in collaboration with lead instructors and the CME team. Provide direct, constructive feedback on navigation safety, boat handling, communication, and decision-making under pressure. Conduct new-hire and promotional assessments at the request of client companies.

Operate and support the simulator.
Set up and operate simulator systems throughout each training scenario. Verify that hardware and software are functioning properly before every class or study. Test new and modified exercise areas and vessel models, including those developed using the K-Sim ExPrep laptop.

Partner with client companies.
Work directly with clients to understand their training needs and establish the scope and objectives of company-specific courses. For feasibility studies, develop simulation exercises that address the client’s objectives while keeping projects on scope and moving forward.

Support course administration.
Build courses in the Learning Management System (LMS), enroll students and maintain student records, prepare course documentation for clients, and work with the E-Learning team to resolve certificate and documentation issues.

Stay current and maintain professional standards.
Keep current with maritime publications, industry regulations, and hands-on maritime practices. Follow SCI policies, the Personnel Manual, and all applicable safety requirements.

What You’ll Bring

· U.S. Coast Guard Master of Towing Vessels license; Inland or Near-Coastal preferred

· Current Radar Observer Endorsement

· Experience serving as captain on commercial towing vessels operating on the Western Rivers, Inland, or Near-Coastal waters

· Strong computer skills and the ability and willingness to learn simulator software

· Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the confidence to teach and present in front of a class

· U.S. Coast Guard Designated Examiner credential
