Job Summary
The Educational Specialist works with up to 50 students within the Foster Care program at any time. This team member is responsible for providing educational advocacy, conducting academic performance monitoring and ensuring that children in our care receive the appropriate educational supports. The Specialist will support the student’s academic journey and progress by ensuring that they are enrolled in a best-fit school, attending school, and have the necessary support and resources to succeed.
Hourly rate: $30.21

Job Summary

The Specialist will support the student’s academic journey and progress by ensuring that they are enrolled in a best-fit school, attending school, and have the necessary support and resources to succeed.

Duties And Responsibilities
- Maintains a caseload of 50 students
- Develops and coordinates Education Plans for each student.
- Maintains regular contact with the student, parent, foster parent, school and case planning staff, ensuring consistency in academic goal planning.
- Advocates/supports the parent and student to ensure proper support is provided.
- Supports the family through the IEP process and works with Department of Education staff to ensure the implementation of the plan.
- Ensures busing for all students on their caseload and school stability if the student changes Foster Homes.
- Assists families with school enrollment and transfers.
- Supports 5th grade students with the middle school selection process.
- Match students to appropriate learning environments, such as special education programs, transfers, HSE programs or alternative school settings.
- Connect students to afterschool and summer extracurricular activities.
- Utilizing the data received by the Department of Education supports students whose promotion may be in doubt.
- Provides referrals for tutoring services as needed and monitors the delivery of service.
- Refers students for college related support, including assistance with FASFA, applications and career development.
- Documents all records and education-based activities within Connections, including updating the Education tab.
- Participate in Family Team Conferences as well as other related case conferences.
- Participate in ongoing training to enhance job skills
- All other related duties as assigned
- Computer proficiency and knowledge of Connections
- Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision
- Knowledgeable of child welfare and Department of Education regulations
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation
Qualifications/Requirements:
- MSW or Master’s degree in Education preferred or BA/BS/BSW with 2 years of related experience.
- Due to the nature of the work environment, work hours will be based on the program's needs and may vary.
- Our Agency operates in 2 locations: Staten Island and Brooklyn. You may be temporarily transferred to either site to meet program needs on rare occasions.
