Essential Functions
- Identify literature for use in all content areas in support of the curriculum.
- Provide curriculum support and training for all teachers and continuous staff development that supports school division initiatives.
- Model and coach instructional methods in a variety of settings (whole group and small group) and provide follow-up support.
- Collaborate with and coach teachers on the use of assessment data to plan instruction; analyze school literacy data and plan for future literacy needs
- Provide ongoing training and follow-up in the use of assessment tools.
- Select instructional materials to meet student needs.
- Participate in collaborative instructional planning.
- Conduct classroom visitations and provides feedback to teachers and administrators on the school's literacy program.
- Serve as a liaison between the school and the Department of Education by attending meetings and disseminating information.
- Assist with the planning and delivery of parent workshops and informational sessions involving the language arts program.
- Remain grounded in content standards and objectives in order to facilitate integrated and concept-based instruction.

- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of English grammar, word usage, word denotations and connotations, spelling, literature and other content areas taught.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Qualifications Profile/Education
- Delaware State Certification as a Reading Specialist
- Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
In accordance with 14 Del. C.
- 1220(a), the Department shall issue a Standard Certificate as a Reading Specialist to an applicant who has a minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience with at least two years in the K to 12 classroom, and who holds a valid Delaware Initial, Continuing, or Advanced License; or Standard or Professional Status Certificate issued by the Department prior to August 31, 2003, who has met the following requirements:
- Official transcript(s) Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of a Master's Degree.
- Education Requirements must meet one of the selections below:
- Master's degree in Reading from a regionally accredited college or university offered by an NCATE/CAEP-specialty organization recognized educator preparation program or from a state-approved educator preparation program that used NCATE standards.
- Bachelor's degree and (30) graduate level credits or Master's degree in any content area and complete (24) graduate level credits in the areas listed below:
- Assessment and Instruction in Writing (3 graduate credits)
- Assessment and Instruction in Reading (6 graduate credits)
- Practicum in Reading to include application of strategies in assessment, instruction and parent involvement (6 graduate credits)
- Literacy in the Content Areas (3 graduate credits)
- Teaching English as a Second Language (3 graduate credits)
- And one of the areas below:
- Literacy Acquisition (3 graduate credits)
- Coaching Adult Learners (3 graduate credits)
- NOTE If you are pursuing the (30) credit option and want ideas for the remaining 6 credits, these courses have been accepted in the past:
- Language Development (3 graduate credits)
- Emergent Literacy (3 graduate credits)
- Children's and/or Adolescent Literature (3 graduate credits)
- Copy of current and valid out-of-state license, if applicable.
