The Sea-Bird Scientific Research & Development Team is seeking an experienced Electro-Optical Sensor Electronics Engineer to lead the electrical design and integration of next-generation optical sensing platforms for ocean science. This role will serve as the primary electrical engineering authority for optical instruments, responsible for the design of precision analog front-ends, mixed-signal electronics, and low-noise signal acquisition systems that enable high-accuracy oceanographic measurements.
The successful candidate will architect and deliver robust, low-power electronic systems that support fluorescence, transmissometry, radiometry, and related optical sensing technologies deployed in harsh subsea environments. Working closely with optical, mechanical, and firmware engineers, this individual will translate sensor concepts into reliable electronic architectures suitable for long-term ocean deployment.
This position report to the VP R&D, and will be located in Bellevue, WA and will be on-site.

The below range reflects the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future. An associate’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors, including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, any collective bargaining agreements, and business or organizational needs.
The compensation range for this role is $130,000 - $150,000 USD per year. This job is also eligible for Bonus Pay.

In this role, a typical day will look like:
- Lead the electrical architecture of cutting‑edge electro‑optical instruments, spanning analog, mixed‑signal, and digital subsystems.
- Design precision analog front‑ends for photodiodes, PMTs, and other detectors—TIAs, low‑noise amplification, filtering, and dynamic range optimization.
- Develop ultra‑low‑noise signal acquisition systems, including ADC selection, sampling strategies, grounding, and shielding.
- Architect power‑efficient electronics optimized for long‑duration, battery‑powered subsea deployments.
- Design and prototype PCBs, including schematic capture, component selection, and design reviews.
- Collaborate with layout engineers to ensure signal integrity, EMI mitigation, grounding strategy, and thermal performance.
- Develop electrical interfaces for LEDs, lasers, spectrometers, detectors, and optical drivers.
- Support embedded firmware development for acquisition, control, and calibration workflows.
- Integrate optical and electronic subsystems to achieve exceptional signal‑to‑noise and measurement accuracy.
- Work closely with mechanical engineers to ensure electronics thrive in pressure housings and harsh subsea environments.
- Conduct lab and field testing, validate performance, and lead root‑cause analysis when needed.
- Explore emerging technologies that can elevate accuracy, reduce power consumption, or unlock new sensing capabilities.
- Contribute to the architecture of next‑generation oceanographic instrumentation.
- MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics or closely related field.
- 5 years of experience designing precision analog and mixed-signal electronics, preferably for sensor systems.
- Strong expertise in:
- Low-noise analog circuit design
- Photodiode and optical detector signal conditioning
- Transimpedance amplifiers and precision amplification
- Mixed-signal data acquisition systems
- ADC/DAC integration
- Experience designing high-reliability electronic systems for harsh or remote environments.
- Familiarity with PCB design processes, signal integrity considerations, grounding strategies, and EMI mitigation.
- Strong data analysis and debugging skills using laboratory instrumentation (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, etc.).
- Ability to work effectively in cross-disciplinary engineering teams.
- Experience with optical sensing technologies such as fluorescence, absorption, scattering, or radiometry.
- Familiarity with embedded firmware development for sensor electronics.
- Experience designing low-power instrumentation for battery-powered or remote deployments.
- Knowledge of oceanographic instrumentation or environmental sensing systems.
