School Counselor

Scranton Preparatory School is currently accepting applications for qualified candidates for the 2026-2027 school year.

Under the supervision of the Director of School Counseling and the Principal of Scranton Preparatory School, the School Counselor serves as a support to students. The School Counselor will work closely with the Principal’s Team, the Faculty, the Learning Support Team, and the School Nurse to support the healthy and positive growth of students.

The ideal candidate will meet the following minimum requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in School Counseling or related field.

• Previous high school counseling experience.

• Strong knowledge of current research in adolescent mental health.

• Experience in individual counseling, as well as in facilitating support groups and group counseling seminar classes.

• Experience supporting students in the college and career exploration process.

• Demonstrated experience and skill in crisis prevention and intervention.

• Strong willingness and ability to collaborate with the counseling team, faculty, and the academic administrative team in all matters related to the students' academic, personal, and social realities.

• Ability to effectively engage parents and develop and facilitate meaningful programming for parents.

• Demonstrated knowledge and application of professional ethics.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• A willingness to animate the Catholic and Jesuit mission of the school and its philosophy and values.

• A genuine enthusiasm for and interest in the co-curricular aspects of the school community.

In collaboration with and under the supervision of the Director of School Counseling, the School Counselor will:

• Provide counseling services for a full-time caseload of one-third of the student population (approximately 215 students), focusing on the academic, personal, and social reality of each student, with an emphasis on their overall mental health and well-being.

• Respond to and support students in crisis, facilitate the referral to higher levels of care when needed, and assist with and support a student’s return to school and continuation of care.

• Collaborate with outside therapists regarding care for students who provide a waiver of confidentiality regarding continuity of care – including inpatient or intensive outpatient treatment.

• Facilitate group counseling classes in Freshman, Junior, and/or Senior Seminar (topics range from study skills, life transitions, leadership, preACT and PSAT readiness and score interpretation, career exploration, personality inventory, etc.)

• Collaborate with the Learning Support Team regarding academic support for students, especially those in the school’s IGNITE program.

• Participate in Student Life Team meetings, grade-level meetings, weekly department meetings, assigned committee meetings, and IGNITE meetings regarding student academic progress and concerns.

• Organize and take part in any special activities, parent information events, projects, or presentations that will assist in meeting the goals of the School Counseling Department, and as directed by the Principal.

• Assist in the administration of the school’s standardized testing program including preACT, PSAT, and proctoring of the AP exams. • Other duties as assigned by the Principal.
