The Assistant Scout Executive will be responsible for supporting all aspects of the Council’s strategic plan and annual adult leader, youth member and unit growth objectives, commissioner service, unit support, Council program support, and youth protection policies. This position will be an exciting, challenging, and significant opportunity for a highly motivated, energetic second or third-assignment BSA professional to expand Scouting in a Council with 0.38% youth market share as of February 28, 2025, the second lowest in the country.

The Scouting America Sequoia Council serves over 1,330 youth members and over 750 volunteer leaders in Fresno, Madera, Kings, and Tulare Counties in California’s San Joaquin Valley and is headquartered in Fresno, CA. Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the CEO/Scout Executive to coordinate a strategic program of comprehensive year-round seasonal adult leadership recruitment for units, youth recruitment, and new unit organization.
  • Be responsible for extending programs to religious, civic, fraternal, educational, and other community-based organizations through volunteers.
  • Execute highly effective recruitment and renewal campaigns that achieve and exceed numerical and on-time objectives.
  • Work with Commissioner staff on improving and stabilizing unit adult leaders, youth membership, and unit retention.
  • Recruit, train, inspire, and staff volunteer committees for membership and new unit growth, operations, and program support of the Council.
  • Provide support to the Board of Directors for all membership and operations-related issues.
  • Serve as Scout Executive designee related to Scouting America Youth Protection policies, adult leader, and youth membership standards.
  • Position the Council to hire additional executives to grow membership and units, to serve existing units, and to serve as direct management staff leaders for additional executives.
  • Participate fully as a Council team member, attending full staff meetings, professional development activities, and other staff meetings as appropriate.
  • Participate in Council events to cultivate relationships with volunteers, current and potential chartered partners, and other community groups that have a like-minded interest in serving young people.
  • Pursue professional growth activities that will grow personal capacity with the approval and support of the CEO/Scout Executive and management staff.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree.
Qualifications
  • Successful experiences in Unit Serving Executive or mid-managerial roles demonstrated membership and unit growth record, and strong annual performance review evaluations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; negotiation skills; and the ability to deal with complex concepts and ambiguity.
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration. The ability to work well both independently and collectively with other team members.
  • Technical/digital competence, including data analytics, report generation, and basic graphic design.
  • Excellent and mature judgment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen and interact effectively with volunteers.
  • Ability to travel within Council territory and work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Must be willing to accept and meet the Scouting America’s leadership and membership standards and subscribe to the Scout Oath and Law.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior Scouting America Unit Serving Executive experience with a strong performance record.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging volunteers in the development of meaningful and productive relationships.
Benefits

Salary: $80,000 – $90,000
