Scout is building an AI operating system for home-service businesses. Our product helps HVAC companies answer calls, communicate with customers, schedule work, support technicians in the field, create invoices, and keep their CRM updated automatically.

We have a working product, real customers, and fast-growing demand. Now we need an experienced engineer who can help turn a rapidly built product into durable, scalable software with disciplined engineering practices.

The Role

We are hiring a senior, highly hands-on engineer who can own the technical evolution of Scout. You will work directly with the founder to strengthen the existing product, ship customer-facing features, and build the systems and practices required to operate reliable production software.

This is not a maintenance role. You will inherit a fast-moving codebase, understand it deeply, identify fragile areas, and improve it without slowing the company down. We need someone who combines startup speed with real engineering judgment.

What You’ll Own

• Productionize and simplify an existing full-stack TypeScript application.
• Build reliable deployments, rollback procedures, release gates, and environment management.
• Improve architecture, testing, observability, security, and operational reliability.
• Own integrations with Housecall Pro, ServiceTitan, Jobber, FieldEdge, Twilio, Vapi, and other third-party platforms.
• Strengthen webhook handling, API idempotency, retries, rate limiting, and failure recovery.
• Improve multi-tenant isolation so every client’s configuration, pricing, credentials, and data remain correct.
• Build automated unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end test coverage.
• Diagnose production issues using logs, metrics, traces, and reproducible test cases.
• Review AI-generated code critically before it reaches production.
• Establish practical engineering standards for pull requests, documentation, migrations, releases, and incident response.
• Continue shipping useful product improvements while steadily reducing technical debt.
• Help shape future engineering hires and technical direction.

What We’re Looking For

• 3 years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong TypeScript, Node.js, React, and API development experience.
• Experience owning real production systems used by paying customers.
• Strong knowledge of databases, authentication, webhooks, queues, background jobs, and distributed-system failure modes.
• Experience with CI/CD, Railway or similar cloud platforms, environment management, monitoring, and rollback strategies.
• Ability to work confidently in a large, imperfect codebase.
• Strong testing instincts and a clear understanding of when unit, integration, and end-to-end tests are appropriate.
• Ability to distinguish a quick prototype from production-ready implementation.
• Excellent debugging skills and a habit of verifying behavior rather than assuming it works.
• High ownership, urgency, and personal accountability.
• Comfortable working directly with a fast-moving, non-technical founder and translating product needs into sound technical decisions.

Working Style

Scout is an early-stage company moving quickly. We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys building, solving hard problems, and taking responsibility for outcomes.

There will be important launches, customer onboarding, and occasional production incidents that require evening or weekend availability. This expectation will be discussed clearly upfront. We want someone with a strong work ethic and startup intensity, but also someone disciplined enough to build systems that reduce emergencies instead of normalizing them.

You should be comfortable saying:

• “This is safe to ship, and here is how I verified it.”
• “This needs another day because the current approach risks customer data.”
• “I found the problem, fixed the root cause, added coverage, and monitored the deployment.”

• Understand Scout’s architecture and critical customer workflows.
• Establish a dependable deployment and rollback process.
• Improve production monitoring and incident visibility.
• Add meaningful coverage around calling, scheduling, CRM synchronization, fieldwork, and invoicing.
• Reduce recurring bugs and client-specific deployment issues.
• Create a clear technical roadmap without slowing feature delivery.
• Become a trusted owner of the product’s production reliability.
