High School Theatre Teacher

Job Description
Reports To: Principal
Terms of Employment: 10-Month Certified Position
Salary: According to State and Local Teacher Salary Schedule

Purpose of Position

The High School Theatre Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering engaging instruction in theatre arts that promotes student creativity, performance skills, collaboration, technical theatre knowledge, and appreciation of dramatic arts. The teacher will develop and implement a comprehensive theatre program that includes classroom instruction, theatrical productions, student performances, and extracurricular opportunities aligned with state standards and district goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instructional Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement rigorous and engaging theatre arts curriculum aligned with state standards and district expectations.
  • Teach courses in areas such as:
    • Theatre Arts
    • Acting
    • Stagecraft
    • Technical Theatre
    • Musical Theatre
    • Play Production
    • Theatre Appreciation
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities.
  • Assess student progress regularly and maintain accurate records of grades, attendance, and performance evaluations.
  • Integrate technology, multimedia, and contemporary instructional practices into theatre instruction.
  • Foster creativity, collaboration, confidence, communication skills, and critical thinking through theatre activities.

Production and Performance Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee school theatrical productions, performances, showcases, and competitions.
  • Coordinate auditions, rehearsals, stage management, set construction, costumes, props, lighting, and sound production.
  • Supervise students during rehearsals, performances, field trips, and extracurricular activities.
  • Collaborate with other staff members and departments for interdisciplinary productions and school events.
  • Promote student participation in theatre festivals, competitions, and community performances.

Classroom and Student Management

  • Establish and maintain a safe, organized, and positive classroom and performance environment.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of student behavior in accordance with district policies and school expectations.
  • Supervise and ensure proper use of theatre equipment, costumes, sets, and technical resources.
  • Encourage student leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and professionalism.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, administrators, and community stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with counselors, administrators, teachers, and support staff to support student success.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional learning communities, professional development, and school activities.
  • Maintain positive relationships with community arts organizations and partners when appropriate.

Program Management

  • Assist in developing and managing the theatre department budget.
  • Maintain inventory of costumes, props, technical equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Coordinate fundraising activities and community partnerships to support theatre programs when approved.
  • Ensure compliance with district policies, safety regulations, copyright laws, and performance licensing requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of theatre arts instruction, acting techniques, stage production, and technical theatre.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development and effective classroom management practices.
  • Ability to direct theatrical productions and supervise large groups of students.
  • Ability to organize rehearsals, performances, and production schedules effectively.
  • Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to integrate culturally responsive and inclusive instructional practices.
  • Proficiency with theatre technology, lighting, sound systems, and instructional technology preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts, Theatre Education, Fine Arts, or related field.
  • Valid North Carolina teaching license or eligibility for licensure in Theatre Arts or related area.
  • Experience teaching theatre or directing student productions preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, and community members.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in classroom, auditorium, stage, and performance settings.
  • Evening and weekend hours may be required for rehearsals, performances, competitions, and special events.
  • Exposure to stage lighting, sound equipment, construction materials, and production environments may occur.
