Position Summary
The Head Boys’ Basketball Coach is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the high school boys’ basketball program, including team supervision, player development, practice and game planning, and fostering an environment of sportsmanship and academic excellence. This position requires leadership, strong communication skills, and a deep understanding of basketball fundamentals and strategies, as well as compliance with North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) rules and district policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and implement a comprehensive boys’ basketball program for grades 9–12.
- Instruct student-athletes in fundamental skills, strategies, and physical training necessary for individual and team success.
- Coordinate all coaching responsibilities with assistant coaches and volunteers.
- Promote and support academic achievement among student-athletes, monitoring eligibility and progress.
- Develop off-season conditioning and training programs in compliance with NCHSAA regulations.
- Ensure player safety by maintaining appropriate supervision and conducting activities in accordance with best practices.
- Manage team equipment, uniforms, and inventory in alignment with school and district policies.
- Uphold standards of behavior and sportsmanship as set by the NCHSAA, the school, and the district.
- Communicate effectively with parents, players, staff, administration, and media as necessary.
- Coordinate game schedules, transportation, and facility use in collaboration with the Athletic Director.
- Participate in fundraising efforts and community outreach initiatives to support the basketball program.
- Foster a positive team culture that supports student-athletes’ social-emotional growth and development.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Prior successful coaching experience at the high school level or higher; head coaching experience preferred.
- Valid North Carolina teaching license preferred (may be required for some school assignments).
- Completion of all required NCHSAA and district-mandated certifications (e.g., CPR/First Aid, Concussion Training, NFHS Coaching Education).
- Strong knowledge of the rules, regulations, techniques, and strategies of high school basketball.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire adolescent athletes and maintain a positive team environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and run for extended periods.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, and physical exertion required during practices and games.
Working Conditions
- Evening and weekend hours required for practices, games, and team-related activities.
- Indoor and outdoor work environments, subject to varying weather conditions.
Terms of Employment
- Seasonal (Winter Sports Season)
- Stipend determined by the Scotland County Schools Athletic Supplement Schedule
- Renewal annually based on performance evaluation and district need
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Athletic Director and/or School Principal in accordance with district policies and procedures.
