What are the responsibilities and job description for the Park Ranger position at Scissortail Park Foundation?
Summary
Park Rangers perform guest services, identify and report issues impacting the park and its guests, wildlife management, public education classes, nature-related interpretive programming, environmental health and safety duties, risk management, and coordinates with local law enforcement to provide security for staff and visitors. Rangers provide park tours, educate schools and other organizations about the protection of our natural resources and the duties of Park Rangers. The Ranger team protects the people, nature, and property within the park, while fostering a sense of inclusion and belonging for everyone.
Park Rangers report to the Director of Safety and have varied schedules, including day shifts, evenings, and weekends to ensure coverage in the park at all times, especially during large events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Performs daily rounds of Scissortail Park multiple times throughout the day, looking for any issues that may impact the safety or health of guests and staff, reporting those issues as needed
· Respond to incidents, ensuring they are properly documented in reports and that the appropriate staff and/or agencies are contacted
· Provides safety and coordinates security support during normal operations, maintenance activities, construction, and shutdown activities
· Develops and/or leads educational programming courses related to nature, plants, trees, wildlife, conservation, composting, recycling, and beekeeping
· Maintains steady communication via phone, radio, email, or other software to respond to instructions, questions, visitor inquiries, staff assistance/requests, and emergencies
· Relays park rules and guidelines to visitors, communicating in a courteous manner
· Maintains an approachable demeanor and open communication with Scissortail Park staff
· Interacts with unhoused persons and provides outreach/resource literature as needed
· Administers basic first aid, CPR, AED and/or stop-the-bleed services to visitors who require emergency medical attention
· Calls 911 for incidents requiring police, fire, or EMS personnel
· Assists with boating and lake operations, including retrieving stranded boaters
· Occasionally loads and unloads materials, equipment and supplies
· Occasionally performs vehicle escorts, load in/load out and safety supervision
· Stays up-to-date with safety training
· Other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities
· No supervisory duties.
Education and/or Experience
· Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred
· Bilingual or basic Spanish-speaking skills preferred
Computer Equipment and Software Requirements
· Strong proficiency in Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Excel
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
· Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License
· Current CPR/First Aid/AED, or ability to obtain
Skills and Abilities Required
· Ability to successfully complete classroom and/or field training and demonstrate competence in areas including but not limited to: CPR/First Aid/AED, tourniquet application, blood borne pathogen precautions, active shooter response, water rescue, fire safety, animal control, managing aggressive behavior/customer service skills, surveillance systems, radio operations, utility vehicle or golf cart operations, homeless outreach, mental health crisis response, park rules, crowd control, bicycle patrol, and severe weather response
· Ability to quickly learn and use incident reporting software, surveillance software, and radio communications equipment
· Ability to interact effectively and respectfully with a diverse population, including people of all ages, interests, viewpoints, and backgrounds
· Ability to interact tactfully with protestors and others exercising their constitutional rights
· Ability to remain calm and effectively lead others during stressful situations or emergencies, while demonstrating good judgment under pressure
· Ability to take direction and follow up on complex or ongoing projects independently
· Ability to use discretion and sound critical thinking skills during visitor rule violations and see the big picture in ensuring the park is safe and welcoming for all
· Ability to maintain punctual and reliable attendance, regardless of weather conditions
· Ability to comprehend and comply with Scissortail Park policies and procedures
· Ability to pass an extensive background investigation and drug screening
Additional Job Requirements
· Clearance of background check.
· Acceptable drug screen results.
Work Environment
Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors. Many locations visited during the course of executing job duties may not be wheelchair accessible. Must be able to perform duties while wearing a uniform and other ranger equipment for extended periods of walking and standing in all weather conditions. All Rangers may be required to work various combination of days, evenings, weekends, some holidays, and other irregular hours.
Note
This position is classified as a safety sensitive position, and due to federal guidelines the detection of marijuana in the pre-employment drug screening will result in a positive test and disqualification from being considered for the position, regardless of the possession of any state issued medical marijuana card.
