Scion Executive Search has been retained to identify the incoming Director of Finance on behalf of our client, Akin, a nonprofit dedicated to helping children and families across Washington state strengthen and grow together. Akin accomplishes this mission by building a brighter future together, rooted in family.


The Director of Finance will be a strategic thought-partner with a strong business acumen who leads and developsan internal team to optimize financial operations in support of Akin and its affiliates. This includes strategy, finance, business planning, and budgeting. This full-time, hybrid opportunity is located in Seattle, Washington.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Director of Finance is responsible for identifying new opportunities to improve efficiency and respond proactively to other departments’ needs. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), they will work closely with senior management to address critical financial planning areas and issues, streamline current systems, and leverage new information technology.


Overseeing a team of up to 5 direct reports, the Director of Finance will have ownership over the analysisof existing strategies, processes, and systems. This position will also have, as necessary, access to paper and electronic protected healthcare information (PHI) and confidential identifiable information (CII) to perform related job duties and responsibilities.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy, Vision, and Leadership

  • Advise the CFO and other key members of senior management on financial planning budgeting and long-term planning.
  • Devise and implement financial strategies aligned with Akin’s strategicgoals.
  • Provide strategic financial counsel to the CFO and other senior management.
  • Contribute to the development of Akin’s strategic goals and objectives as well as the overall management of the organization.
  • Maintain continuous lines of communication, keeping the CFO informed of all critical issues.

Finance

  • Oversee the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes; and keep senior leadership team and Akin’s Board abreast of the organization’s financial status.
  • Lead the capital budget process, engaging Facilities and other key stakeholders to ensure capital projects are funded.
  • Own the financial management of grants and contracts, including monitoring revenue billing and related accounts receivable and ensuring compliance with financial reporting requirements.
  • Develop and monitor key financial performance indicators in conjunction with senior leadership.
  • Supervise the planning, development, and ongoing monitoring of Akin’s short-, mid-, and long-term forecasting and position control.
  • Create financial models as needed to assess the financial impact of strategic decisions.

Team Leadership

  • Build, develop, and lead a high-performing finance team.
  • Foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and collaboration withinthe finance department.
  • Provide performance management, reviews and goal settingfor finance team.
  • Manage workloadissues effectively to create a workplace that increases employee retention and strengthens communication within and outside the department.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a finance-related field required; CPA and/or MBA strongly preferred.
  • 6 years of broad financial and operational management experience.
  • 6 years of progressive leadership experience managing, developing, and coaching teams.
  • Experience in nonprofit, human services, or other mission-driven organizations preferred.
  • Proven success in grants and contract management within large, complex organizations.
  • Deep understanding of nonprofit financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, reporting, compliance, and internal controls.
  • Skilled in developing financial models to assess strategic impact and guide decision-making.
  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experienced in financial technology applications.
  • Experience with Sage and MIP (Abila) systems is strongly preferred.
  • Experience selecting, implementing, and overseeing financial or budget reporting software systems.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, including the ability to translate complex financial concepts for programmatic, operational, and fundraising colleagues.
  • Proven capacity to build rapport, trust, and credibility across teams, cross-functional stakeholders, and with external partners.
  • Strong negotiation, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities that support sound, data-informed decisions.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, integrity, and discretion in handling confidential or sensitive information.
  • Committed to equity and fostering an inclusive, collaborative organizational culture.
  • Must successfully complete a driver’s motor vehicle record check.


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

In addition to a competitive base salary of $140,000 to $160,000, Akin also provides a comprehensive benefits package which includes access to robust health, vision, and dental insurance; 401(k) with up to 3% employer contribution; Employee Assistance Plans (EAP); Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA); Health Savings Account (HSA); Voluntary Long-Term Care Plan; Voluntary Life & Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance; short-term disability insurance; Critical Illness, Hospital, and Accident Insurance; Financial Wellness & Identity Protection; Voluntary Long-Term Care; and 14 days of vacation accrued in the first year, 12 days of sick pay accrued per year, 2 Employee Appreciation days, as well as 14 observed paid annual holidays per year.
