POSITION TITLE

Head Coach

REPORTS TO

Athletic Director and Building Administrator

POSITION SUMMARY

The Head Coach is responsible for leading and developing a comprehensive athletic program that supports student growth, skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and academic success. The Head Coach provides leadership and oversight for all levels of the program, including coordination with middle school and high school coaching staff, while promoting a safe, positive, and student-centered athletic environment aligned with District expectations and values.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement a cohesive program philosophy, system of play, and skill progression from middle school through high school varsity levels.
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and support to assistant coaches and middle school coaching staff within the program.
  • Promote positive sportsmanship, ethical conduct, fair play, and respect among athletes, coaches, parents, and spectators.
  • Foster high expectations for both academic achievement and athletic performance.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Director regarding scheduling, facilities usage, transportation, equipment needs, budgeting, and program operations.
  • Assist in coordinating practice schedules and contest preparations with consideration for facility availability, participant welfare, and other District activities.
  • Maintain positive communication and professional relationships with students, families, staff, officials, and community members.
  • Organize and conduct preseason parent/guardian meetings to communicate program expectations, athletic policies, training rules, eligibility requirements, and conduct expectations.
  • Ensure all required participation forms, physicals, insurance documents, athletic contracts, and eligibility requirements are completed and submitted prior to participation.
  • Coordinate with administrators, counselors, and teaching staff regarding student-athlete academic eligibility and support.
  • Ensure appropriate supervision is provided at all practices, contests, team activities, and travel events.
  • Provide accurate and timely program information to the Athletic Director, including team rosters, schedules, awards recommendations, transportation requests, and other required documentation.
  • Maintain accurate records of injuries and complete all required accident or incident reports within established timelines.
  • Oversee the proper use, inventory, care, storage, and security of equipment, uniforms, and facilities.
  • Ensure facilities are properly secured following practices, contests, and team activities.
  • Take reasonable precautions to provide for the health, safety, and welfare of students and to protect District property and facilities.
  • Maintain and safeguard District-issued equipment, materials, and keys.
  • Model professionalism, integrity, and appropriate conduct at all times.
  • Immediately report suspected abuse, neglect, harassment, or safety concerns to the appropriate administrator or agency in accordance with District policy and state law.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Knowledge of the sport, coaching techniques, and program development at the secondary level.
  • Ability to effectively lead, supervise, and communicate with students, staff, parents, and community members.
  • Ability to organize, supervise, and promote a safe and positive athletic environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and student growth.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Current First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain prior to the season.
  • Completion of all OSAA, District, and state-required coaching certifications and trainings, including ASEP or equivalent training if required by the District.
  • Successful completion of a criminal history background check and fingerprinting.
  • Valid driver’s license and successful completion of District-approved driver/minibus training if required for assigned duties.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Extra duty assignment for the designated athletic season.
  • Salary and work year established by the District extra duty salary schedule and Board approval.
