Summary Of Responsibilities

The Director of Academic Success provides leadership, oversight, and strategic direction for the Office of Academic Success. The Director is responsible for ensuring the delivery of comprehensive academic support services that promote student learning, persistence, retention, and academic achievement.

The Director oversees tutoring, writing support, STEM academic support, Supplemental Instruction, academic coaching, academic recovery initiatives, learning community coordination, and student success technologies. The position is responsible for developing sustainable operational systems, assessment practices, staff supervision structures, and evidence-informed strategies that support student success and institutional goals.

The Director works collaboratively with faculty, advisors, athletics, student affairs, institutional research, and academic leadership to strengthen student outcomes and remove barriers to academic achievement. As the institution continues to evolve its student support model, the Director will

contribute to the development, coordination, and continuous improvement of academic advising initiatives and related student success strategies.

The Director may teach one Freshman Studies, First-Year Seminar, or other assigned course each semester in support of student success and student transition initiatives.

Essential Functions

Leadership and Administration

  • Provide strategic leadership for the Office of Academic Success.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve academic support programs and services.
  • Establish and maintain documented operational procedures, workflows, service standards, and continuity plans.
  • Develop annual goals, priorities, assessment plans, and reports aligned with institutional objectives.
  • Manage departmental budgets and resources in accordance with university policies.
  • Ensure continuity, quality, and accessibility of academic support services.
  • Maintain compliance with institutional, accreditation, and reporting requirements.
  • Serve as the primary administrator and departmental point person for assigned student success technologies and platforms.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Academic Excellence to develop strategic priorities and future-state recommendations for academic support and student success initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Institutional Research and other campus partners to support reporting and data informed decision making.

Academic Support Services

  • Oversee tutoring, writing support, STEM support services, Supplemental Instruction, academic coaching, and related academic success programs.
  • Coordinate workshops, training opportunities, and educational programming that support student success.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing, scheduling, training, supervision, and evaluation of professional and student staff.
  • Support the development and implementation of peer-led learning initiatives, including tutoring and Supplemental Instruction programs.
  • Monitor service utilization, student engagement, and program effectiveness.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve student participation and academic outcomes.
  • Coordinate outreach and communication efforts to increase awareness and utilization of services.
  • Support the development of both in-person and online academic support resources.
  • Ensure services remain responsive to changing student needs and institutional priorities.

Academic Recovery, Retention, and Persistence

  • Lead academic recovery efforts for students on academic probation or experiencing academic difficulty.
  • Collaborate with faculty, advisors, athletics, and student affairs to identify and support at-risk students.
  • Monitor student success indicators and develop interventions that promote persistence and retention.
  • Coordinate programs and initiatives designed to improve academic performance, student engagement, and degree progression.
  • Utilize data to assess outcomes and guide continuous improvement efforts.
  • Develop and implement strategies that support student persistence and academic achievement.

Academic Advising and Student Success Coordination

  • Collaborate with academic leadership and campus stakeholders to strengthen advising practices and student support systems.
  • Participate in the development, assessment, and continuous improvement of advising-related initiatives.
  • Support advisor training, communication, and coordination efforts as assigned.
  • Assist in the development of advising policies, procedures, and student success strategies.
  • Assume increasing responsibility for advising operations, coordination, or supervision as institutional structures evolve.

Supervision and Personnel Management

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate professional staff, graduate assistants, and student employees.
  • Establish clear expectations, accountability measures, and professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation, communication, and performance management practices.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings, individual supervision meetings, and performance evaluations.

Other Duties

  • Provide oversight and coordination of learning community operations and related student success initiatives.
  • Teach one Freshman Studies, First-Year Seminar, or other assigned course as needed.
  • Maintain University safety standards and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of university goals and priorities.

Required Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum three years of progressively responsible experience in higher education student success, academic support, advising, retention, learning assistance, tutoring, or related areas.
  • Experience supervising professional staff and/or student employees.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and use assessment results to improve programs and services.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships across academic and student affairs units.
  • Commitment to student success and a student-centered approach to higher education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five or more years of leadership experience in academic success, student success, advising, retention, learning support programs, or related areas.
  • Experience with academic advising, advising administration, advisor development, or advising assessment.
  • Experience implementing or managing student success technologies, CRM systems, early alert platforms, case management systems, or related technologies.
  • Experience developing operational procedures, assessment plans, and strategic initiatives.
  • Experience leading organizational change, program development, or operational redesign initiatives.
  • Teaching experience in higher education, particularly first-year experience, student success, developmental education, or related courses.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in retention, persistence, academic recovery, advising, and student success.
  • Experience working with peer educator models, tutoring programs, Supplemental Instruction, learning centers, or academic support services.

Work is performed in a professional higher education environment requiring frequent interaction with students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required to support student success initiatives, university events, and departmental operations.
