Position Summary

We are seeking excellent candidates for the role of Elementary School Physical Education Teacher. Candidates should be compelling educational practitioners who are confident in their capacity to create and deliver a dynamic, engaging and challenging curriculum to students. The primary purpose of the Physical Education Teacher is to maximize the learning potential of every student in your care.In addition to their teaching assignments, all teaching faculty are expected to contribute to the life of the school community in general. Schools of the Sacred Heart is committed to an in-person teaching model and faculty must be prepared to adhere to and support our Health and Safety Plan.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates an expertise in Physical Education

  • Is a responsible and inspiring physical education teacher

  • Is knowledgeable of physical education curriculum

  • Participates actively in the ongoing review and development of K-12 PE curriculum

  • Presents well-prepared and effective lessons

  • Implements effective classroom management techniques and strategies

  • Recognizes and respects students' individual learning needs

  • Develops positive and appropriate rapport with students

  • Maintains appropriate supervision of students as assigned

  • Fosters a professional and safe learning environment

  • Demonstrates and models sport-specific techniques, athletic movements, agility drills, and conditioning exercises taught in the PE curriculum at a level sufficient for students to observe and replicate correct form

  • Maintains continuous visual and auditory awareness of all students under supervision and reacts immediately to emerging safety concerns, altercations, or medical emergencies

  • Responds swiftly and decisively to student injuries, medical incidents, and safety situations

  • Maintains current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification

  • Embraces and models the mission of our Sacred Heart Schools as articulated in the five Goals

  • Adheres to Employee Handbook guidelines

  • Upholds professional standards of attire, punctuality, courtesy and discretion

  • Communicates appropriately and effectively with students (includes timely feedback regarding progress, assignments, exams, etc)

  • Communicates appropriately and effectively with parents (includes information regarding curricular program, class-specific events, and timely feedback about student progress)

  • Communicates appropriately and effectively with colleagues

  • Coaches one major Varsity sport or two Middle Form or like sports, with additional compensation provided

  • Attends/participates in required faculty/PE department team meetings and school events

  • Attends/participates in professional development opportunities and integrates new learning into instructional practice

  • Positively contributes to the culture of the school

Other Responsibilities may include:

o    Lunch/Recess duty
o    Daytime and/or overnight field trips
o    Morning drop off duty
o    Afternoon dismissal duty
o    Morning Supervision of students
o    Active participation on school committees
o    Continued professional development
o    Attendance at faculty/department meetings
o    Attendance at required evening events, including BTS, Open House/Evening School
o    Delivery of parent/teacher conference (on occasion outside of school hours)
o    Chaperone Student Activities
o    Proctoring
o    Participation at various activities, chapel, assemblies, liturgies
o    Participation/leadership at community service events/retreats

 

Qualifications

Requires BA/BS degree.  BA/BS/MA degree and/or credential in exercise science or physical education strongly preferred.
Prior Physical Education teaching required.
Excellent writing, communication and grammar skills.
Requires demonstrated experience using a wide range of instructional technology tools. Direct experience using iPads, laptops, and Google Apps strongly preferred.
Must be detail-oriented, organized and willing to take initiative.
Must have excellent teamwork skills.
Requires the ability to work well with children and adults. 
Must be a role model in embracing and living out the Schools’ mission, goals and criteria.
Experience with independent schools is preferred.

 

Physical Requirements

o    Conduct physical teaching sessions throughout the day, including demonstrating and modeling the athletic skills and movements taught in the elementary  school PE curriculum — such as sport-specific techniques (proper throwing, catching, dribbling, passing, and swinging mechanics), agility and footwork patterns, stretching and conditioning exercises, and correct form for strength and fitness activities — at a level sufficient for students to observe and replicate. 
o    Actively participate in and lead PE activities alongside students, including warm-ups, skill drills, conditioning exercises, and game play, across a typical instructional day. 
o    Set up, move, and break down PE equipment and other objects weighing up to 50 lbs (e.g., mats, goals, equipment carts, bleacher sections). 
o    Sustain physical activity, including standing, walking, and active demonstration, for the majority of a 4–8 hour instructional day. 
o    Move quickly across indoor and outdoor activity spaces — including gymnasiums, athletic fields, courts, and pool decks — to respond to student injuries, altercations, or safety incidents. 
o    Maintain continuous visual and auditory awareness of all students under supervision and react immediately to emerging safety concerns or medical  emergencies. 
o    Physically assist, support, or move an injured or distressed student, including kneeling to the student’s level and helping the student to safety. 
o    Administer first aid, CPR, and AED use as a first responder to medical incidents occurring during classes, practices, games, and assigned supervisory periods.
o    Regularly lift, carry, push, or pull 1–50 lbs; bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb stairs. 
o    Work on campus in indoor and outdoor environments that are loud, active, and subject to variable temperatures. 
o    Travel for field trips, athletic events, or professional development. 
o    Work occasional evenings and weekends for school events and athletic competitions
