Job Summary
The Director of Major Gifts is responsible for developing short-term and long-term strategies for both major and planned giving. This position will be responsible for securing major gifts (5-figure and above) in support of the college and its mission. This includes identifying, managing and building relationships with individuals, foundation and corporate donors and prospects. This position will be responsible for drafting and executing gift agreements. Must be able to work as a team to strategize, implement, and execute philanthropic plans and priorities. The director of Major Gifts will represent the Foundation and Schoolcraft College at community events and serve as an ambassador for the mission.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in business or a related field.
  • Ten (10) years of fundraising experience, including capital campaigns and knowledge related to planned giving vehicles.
  • Three (3) years of experience supervising staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written communications and presentation skills.
  • Direct experience with an integrated data system.
  • Ability to cultivate and steward successful working relationships with donors, volunteers and the Foundation Board.
  • Capacity to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks to meet all assigned deadlines.
  • High level of initiative, motivation, and creativity.
  • Ability to keep confidential information.
  • High level of fiduciary knowledge and responsibility.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in business or a related field.
  • Experience working in philanthropy with an emphasis in major gifts, campaigns, annual giving, planned giving and/or corporate/foundation relations.
  • Experience working in higher education development.

  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Office Environment: This role may involve being in a stationary position in front of a computer, using a keyboard, mouse (or applicable equipment) and telephone. This role may also involve standing and walking for periods of time, and the use of hands and moving objects on occasion, of up to 10-20 lbs. Specific vision abilities required may include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
