Position Summary

The Service Center of Excellence’s, Continuous Improvement, Staff Development, and Engagement (CISDE) is responsible for developing training resources and materials for various units within the University’s Division of Finance and Operations. Our office collaborates with subject matter experts (SMEs) across the University to develop, deploy, and update instructor guides, quick reference cards, computer-based trainings (CBTs), train-the-trainer materials, and more. This unit also conducts live in-person and virtual trainings over Zoom.

The Training Specialist will be responsible for working with SMEs to create and/or updated CBTs, user guides, and other training resources/documents on a variety of topics.

The selected candidate will be employed by the School of Government Services (SOG Services), but their work location and reporting responsibilities will be at the Service Center of Excellence’s, Continuous Improvement, Staff Development, and Engagement (CISDE) unit. SOG Services assists faculty and staff at the UNC School of Government in carrying out its important mission: to improve the lives of North Carolinians by engaging in practical scholarship that helps public officials and citizens understand and improve state and local government. As a nonprofit organization and an official affiliated entity of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, SOG Services also contributes to advancing UNC-Chapel Hill’s broader mission of academic excellence, research, and public service.

Hybrid: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • As directed by the CISDE Director, or Lead Training Specialist, design and develop instructor-led courses, computer-based trainings, webinars, instructor guides, student guides, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, job aids, and reference materials for identified customers.
  • Design and deliver instructor-led courses and computer-based trainings with consideration to policies, procedures, and guidelines; utilizing excellent communication and presentation skills; incorporating research-based best practices for adult learning. Ensuring that the explanation of complex subjects is presented in a clear and interesting manner.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to update current CBTs, instructor guides, student guides, job aids, and other reference materials.
  • Ensure content of all training materials and presentations emphasizes best practices in digital accessibility adhering to applicable laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines.
  • Serve as a Learning Administrator for Carolina Talent My Learning, learning management system.
  • Attention to detail and organization is critical in this role. The ability to master new skills quickly and work independently is important to be successful in dealing with multiple and competing priorities as well as an extremely diverse workload.


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities)

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of adult learning theory and instructional design methodologies for instructor-led in person or virtual learning, and self-guided e-learning.
  • Ability to understand technical policies, procedures, and information to write clear, concise, and accurate user guides, job aids, and other training resource materials.
  • Ability to communicate and discuss training needs with individuals at all levels to assess skill levels and training needs.
  • Ability to assess, target, and align training needs with individual, departmental and University goals.
  • Progressive experience in a training or teaching role including curriculum development, needs assessment, and session evaluation.
  • Working knowledge of Articulate Storyline 360 is essential.
  • Working knowledge of standard software applications such as Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, PowerPoint, etc.) and Zoom.
  • Working knowledge of adult learning theory, principles, and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of techniques and methods of conducting formal and informal training programs.
  • Experience with learning management systems is preferred.

Salary : $55,000 - $63,000
