Substitute
TITLE: School Nutrition Employee Substitute
Primary Purpose:
To provide temporary support in School Nutrition kitchens, warehouse, and office settings as needed. The School Nutrition Substitute safely and efficiently assists with food preparation and service, warehouse receiving and delivery, and clerical/office functions to ensure continuous operations and compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Duties support the following USDA programs, each with separate regulations: National School Lunch Program (NSLP), School Breakfast Program (SBP), Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), and Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to obtain a Texas-approved Food Handler Certification.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Basic computer, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to interact professionally with students, staff, and the public
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Kitchen/Food Service Support
- Assist with food preparation, assembly, and service in compliance with USDA meal pattern requirements
• Follow FDA Food Code and local health department regulations when storing, preparing, and serving food
• Refill and replace food, condiments, and utensils as needed
• Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, utensils, and work areas
• Maintain high standards of personal hygiene, appearance, and food safety
• Assist with inventory, stocking, and cleanup
• Support special events and meal service as assigned
Warehouse/Delivery Support
- Assist with receiving, handling, storing, and rotating food and supply products
• Help maintain clean, sanitary, safe, and pest-free warehouse and storage areas
• Assist with loading, unloading, and delivering products as assigned
• Operate equipment safely (forklift operation only if certified)
• Maintain product quality, accuracy, and security
• Assist with food preparation, delivery, and cleanup for special events, including after regular hours if needed
Office/Clerical Support
- Greet visitors and assist with basic office needs
• Answer phones, route calls, and take messages
• Assist with data entry, filing, recordkeeping, and report preparation
• Help with processing invoices, grocery orders, payroll support, or meal applications as assigned
• Maintain confidentiality of student and departmental information
• Assist office staff with clerical duties to maintain efficient departmental operations
General Duties
- Exhibit ethical, professional conduct at all times
• Maintain cooperative working relationships with District personnel and the public
• Follow all District, USDA, TDA, and departmental policies and procedures
• Perform other duties as assigned by the School Nutrition Designee

- Maintain emotional control under stress
• Frequent standing, walking, pushing, and pulling
• Moderate lifting and carrying; some stooping, bending, and kneeling
• Exposure to kitchen heat, cold storage environments (warehouse temperatures ranging from -19° to 70°), and office settings
• Occasional prolonged or irregular hours as needed
