POSITION DESCRIPTION

ASL (American Sign Language) Interpreter

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Interpret spoken material from teachers, classmates, and other school personnel into sign language for the understanding of the deaf or hard of hearing student(s) as well as interpret communication from the deaf or hard of hearing student(s) into spoken language for hearing individuals as needed.

Demonstrates commitment to the education of children by supporting the organizational vision, mission, guiding principles, and strategic direction.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide expressive and voice interpreting (may include American Sign Language, a form of manually coded English, and/or oral interpreting) for deaf or hard of hearing student(s) in mainstream classes.

4. Interpret spoken material from teachers, classmates, and other school personnel into sign language for the understanding of the deaf or hard of hearing student(s) as well as interpret communication from the deaf or hard of hearing student(s) into spoken language for hearing individuals as needed.

5. Collaborate and consult with other IEP service providers and general education staff regarding student(s) needs and progress and assisting in charting the progress as requested.

6. Provide interpreting services for deaf or hard of hearing student(s) during school-sponsored activities as requested.

7. Provide educational support to deaf or hard of hearing student(s if needed, and when interpreting is not needed.

8. Participate in educational team meetings, including the development and review of progress on the Individual Education Plan, providing insight on the success of communications strategies.

9. Provide interpreting for extracurricular activities and parent meetings when necessary.

10. Assist in providing awareness and enrichment activities regarding deafness to hearing

students and staff.

11. Maintain regular and predictable attendance.

12. Demonstrates commitment to the education of children by supporting the organizational vision, mission, guiding principles, and strategic direction.

13. Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.

14. Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by

the teacher.

15. Help students with their clothing if needed

16. Responsible for student safety; follows safety procedures. Assist with the supervision of

students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips, loading, and

unloading of buses.

17. Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about

students as is expected of teachers.

18. Use technology effectively with students and staff to facilitate teaching and learning.

19. Establish effective interpersonal relationships within the school and its community.

20. Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with other members of staff.

21. Help to instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic

values.

22. Serve as a positive role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and

as responsible, intelligent human beings.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma required. Prefer highly - qualified candidates with an associate’s

degree or bachelor’s degree.

  • License #884 required. Completion of an interpreter preparation program or equivalent

experience required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

1. Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of

force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. This type of work

involves sitting, standing, and walking.

2. Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral

information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handling

and working with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.

3. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or illegal substance in the workplace in

compliance with Policy 3122.01 throughout his/her employment in the District.
