A High School Play Set Designer is responsible for planning, creating, and overseeing the construction of stage scenery that supports the artistic vision of the spring play. Working collaboratively with the director, the set designer develops concepts, and layouts that enhance the play while ensuring safety, functionality, and budget considerations.
Responsibilities include designing and selecting scenery, coordinating the construction, painting, and installation of set pieces, managing materials and supplies, and supervising students involved in set building. The set designer also assists with scene changes, troubleshooting technical challenges, and maintaining a safe working environment throughout rehearsals and performances.
This position requires creativity, organization, effective communication skills, and the ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends during production periods.
Qualifications
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to communicate effectively with students and school personnel
- Experience in theater productions, stagecraft, set design, construction, or related artistic activities preferred
- Basic knowledge of carpentry tools, painting techniques, and construction safety practices
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, volunteers, and community members
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment as needed
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends during rehearsals and performance periods
- Demonstrated ability to create a positive and supportive learning environment for students.
Pay: $1,320.00 - $1,540.00 per year
