What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Special Education Team-Special Education Teacher-Self Contained Middle and High School position at School Administrative Unit 43?
We are seeking a compassionate and innovative Special Education Teacher to lead our self-contained secondary program. This position focuses on supporting students with significant developmental and adaptive needs by providing Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) that bridges the gap between academic learning and real-world independence. The ideal candidate is passionate about functional life skills, community-based instruction, and helping students transition successfully into adulthood.
Key Responsibilities
Functional Instruction: Design and implement individualized lessons focusing on functional academics (money management, time telling, reading for information), daily living skills (personal care, cooking), and vocational readiness.
Community-Based Instruction (CBI): Lead regular community outings to help students generalize skills in real-world settings (e.g., grocery shopping, navigating public transportation, and practicing safety awareness).
Social-Emotional & Behavioral Support: Utilize data from assessments (such as the BASC-3) to implement regulation strategies for students who may experience irritability, withdrawal, or difficulty with prosocial behaviors.
Progress Monitoring: Maintain rigorous data collection on IEP goals and objectives to track growth in adaptive skills, communication, and independence.
Team Leadership: Supervise and direct a team of paraprofessionals to ensure a safe, supportive, and high-engagement classroom environment.
