Social Studies Teacher - Marshwood Middle School

Position Title: Middle School Classroom Teacher
Department: Marshwood Middle School
Reports to: Administrator
POSITION SUMMARY:
To teach junior high school children (usually grades 6 though 8) a content area subject within
the framework of an interdisciplinary team of teachers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned)
1. Plans and develops course of study suitable for a particular grade level and subject
following curriculum guidelines of school district and state requirements.
2. Develops and presents specific lesson plans, using a variety of means, including
lectures, projects, group discussions, exhibits, field trips, audiovisual and library
resources, computers, and the Internet.
3. Prepares assignments and tests for in-school preparation and homework. Monitors,
assists, corrects, and grades student performances.
4. Conducts standardized tests in accordance with district policies and state law.
5. Maintains order in classroom, and administers discipline when necessary to achieve
proper behavior.
6. Shares, with other teachers, lunchroom duties and responsibility for monitoring halls,
recess periods and bus supervision.
7. Counsels students when academic difficulties or behavioral problems arise.
8. Keeps records of academic performance, attendance, and social acclimation. Reports
on all aspects of student development for school records and parents; conducts parent-
teacher conferences on both a regularly scheduled and as-needed basis.
9. Keeps parents informed of student progress through regularly scheduled
progress reports and report card procedures as well direct contact with
parents when student performance declines or as requested by parents.
10. Consults with other professionals where there appears to be evidence of learning
disabilities or problems of social adjustment. Coordinates decisions with parents
concerning any specialized intervention that appears warranted. Reports cases of
suspected child abuse according to state law.
11. Recommends promotion and/or placement of students in appropriate classroom
situation for ensuing year.
12. Participates in faculty meetings, educational conferences, professional training
seminars, and workshops.
13. Reviews district crisis plan annually.
13. Maintains current appropriate state certification for teaching assignment.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree with sufficient credits for state certification as a middle school classroom
teacher.
A Master's degree and specialized training for dealing with that age group are highly desirable
and preferred.
