Join an award winning 5 Star Library! The Schaumburg Township District Library is looking for a Library Reference Assistant to join our team at our Hanover Park Branch. We are looking for an energetic, competent and detail-oriented Library Reference Assistant to support our Central location. This is a 30 hour a week, part time, hourly position. Hours are as follows and requires flexibility.
- Mondays: 8:45AM – 4:15PM
- Tuesdays: 8:45AM – 4:15PM
- Wednesdays: 1:30PM-9:00PM
- Thursdays: 1:30PM-9:00PM
- Every 4th Saturday, plus the second 5th Saturday: 9:00AM-5:00PM
- Will be off on Monday of the week working the Saturday
The schedules are based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed. The hourly rate range for this position is $19.81-$24.62; based on skills and qualifications.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Reference Assistant is responsible for assessing and fulfilling the patron’ need for information or materials. This is accomplished by (1) Using the resources available in the Library; and/or (2) requesting information or materials from or referring patrons to the appropriate department, service, or outside agency. The Reference Assistant is also responsible for assisting in the development of programs for all ages assisting in school services, and satisfying public service requirements for the Branch location.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:
Public Service
- Maintain regular desk hours; be generally available to assist patrons and answer questions.
- Participate in staff meetings, individual meetings with Branch Manager, and other meetings as required.
- Assess patrons’ needs effectively and efficiently, either in person, over the telephone, or in writing.
- Develop strong research skills and techniques to help patrons to the fullest degree possible.
- Work with all age groups and demographics effectively.
- Assist the public with self-service resources including computers, photocopier, printer, scanner, fax machine.
- Assist in areas of circulation, registration, overdue matters as needed.
- Process items on hold for patrons.
- Give information, based on a primary source, from a reliable authority.
- Serve as “Person in Charge” of the Branch Library in the absence of the Branch Coordinator and when he or she is the senior Reference Assistant at the Branch Library.
- Manage and complete special projects, as requested.
Professional Development
- Collection:
- Maintain working knowledge of the Library’s reference tools and materials, the online catalog, and other digital resources.
- Instruct patrons in the use of the Library’s reference tools and materials, the online catalog, and other digital resources
- Community:
- Stay informed about the names of officials, organizations, clubs, businesses, schools, social agencies, etc., in the greater Schaumburg area.
- Maintain working knowledge of the services and practices of the RAILS Library System.
- Keep apprised of the offerings of neighboring public and special libraries, their strengths and weaknesses.
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. or B.S.) from four-year college or university is required; or four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge or word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications is required. Spanish language proficiency preferred.
