Job Summary: Special Education Paraprofessionals provide essential support to students with disabilities in inclusive and specialized educational settings. They work under the guidance of certified teachers to assist students in achieving their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals, Section 504 plan objectives, and overall academic success. Paraprofessionals are responsible for fostering a positive and supportive learning environment where students can thrive.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assist students with self-help (i.e. feedings, life skills, personal hygiene activities, diapering, lifting, transferring) and other health related services as they apply to a particular program and/or student to ensure the safety and comfort of the student.
- Implement individualized learning strategies and adapt instructional materials to meet diverse learning needs.
- Implement strategies for managing student behavior/emotion as directed (may include, de-escalation techniques, escorting, providing breaks, socialization integration skills, and implementation of behavior plans) in order to help facilitate a more successful learning environment.
- Assist with maintaining and collecting accurate and timely data in order to monitor students’ academic and behavioral progress.
- Participate in student assessment, program development and team meetings in order to assist and collaborate in meeting student goals and personal needs.
- Provide required supervision and support (hallway, lunch, classroom, playground, bus, before/after school, gym, library, etc.).
- Participate in ongoing professional development and training to enhance skills and knowledge and special education best practices.
- Develop and maintain a substitute folder with essential information for substitute paraprofessionals.
Minimum Requirements:
- Is at least 18 years of age and;
- Holds a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent (GED)
- Illinois Professional Educator License, Paraprofessional License, or Substitute License
