What are the responsibilities and job description for the Principal Infrastructure Engineer position at ScaleneWorks INC?
Are we looking for someone more on the software engineering side or the infrastructure engineer side? From the JD, it reads much more infra-heavy, but then it talks about needing to know how to integrate these enterprise apps and know about APIs and data, which is confusing.
- The role is more infra related than software engineering. Infra, however, would primarily cover SaaS with knowledge in the following:
- SaaS platform types and understanding of basic structures (ie: host platforms like AWS and failover regions). Does not, however, need to be an expert in AWS
- API types (ie: pre-built connectors) and auth models. We promote more buy vs build and do not expect this role to code API’s. Need to understand types for designs
- Security models like encryption in transit and at rest.
- Knowledge of networking as it relates to designing solutions
- Knowledge of premise based host environments (virtualization, etc)
- Good understanding of data flows
Do we want someone who has actually been the engineer doing the application implementations, being hands-on, integrating with the other apps, or someone who is more of the overseer of the engineers doing those configurations themselves?
- Would prefer someone who has previously done the work so they can more easily design solutions. They will not be hands on in this role. They will design the solution to be handed over to the engineering teams as needed. They will also be responsible for socializing the design, seeking approvals, and updating reference architectures as needed.
Does this person need to have been the main architect on designing how these tools will be implemented and integrated within the org or can they be someone who's worked with the architects to define how these rollouts will be done and the strategy behind it?
- This person will be the main architect designing the solution. They will be working with existing engineering teams on designs.
Lastly, what are the major projects this person will be coming in and working on/overseeing over the next six months? Is it implementation from scratch, increasing the success of things already in process, or more someone who can oversee, design the architecture for any new enterprise tech that they need to implement in 2026?
- Implementations from scratch – enhancing existing. They will not directly oversee the effort. This is not a management or PM style role.
Adding a bit more color. This role would:
- Work with business partners on their needs. Example: HR wants an application to manage contractors not in primary HR system. This solution must integrate with primary HR system.
- Utilize gartner quadrant plus existing experience to help vet vendors. Research options with definite security and resiliency focus.
- Draw up design in Lucid showing application, platform, integrations, access (laptop/mobile), etc
- Fill in high level security and data flows
- Present solution to review board/answer questions
Maintain reference architectures and service mappings
