What are the responsibilities and job description for the MACHINE SETUP TECHNICIAN position at Scahefer Brush Manufactuing, LLC?
About the role
We make brushes on automated production machinery. The machines themselves aren’t the hard part. What we need is someone who can set them up right the first time, every time: change over tooling between jobs, stay ahead of worn parts instead of chasing breakdowns, keep every setup documented and repeatable, and treat the changeover process like a craft. You’ll be the person the floor relies on to get a machine from “last job done” to “first good piece” fast and clean.
We’ll train you on our machines. We can’t train consistency and mechanical sense — that’s what we’re hiring for.
What you’ll do
- Perform machine changeovers between jobs: swap and align tooling and fixtures, set machine parameters, and verify the first piece against the spec before releasing the machine to production.
- Replace wear parts on a schedule, not after they fail. Keep the spares organized and stocked.
- Build and maintain setup sheets for every recurring job (tooling list, settings, photos, checkpoints) so a setup runs the same way no matter who does it.
- Do routine preventive maintenance: cleaning, lubrication, tension and alignment checks.
- Troubleshoot recurring problems to the root cause and fix the process, not just the symptom.
- Track changeover times and shave them: better staging, better sequence, the right tools at hand.
- Train and coach machine operators on setups and daily checks. Run the machine yourself when needed.
- Follow lockout/tagout and shop safety practices without exception.
What we’re looking for
- 2 years setting up production machinery. Brush machines are ideal, but packaging lines, injection molding, stamping/progressive dies, wire forming, screw machines, printing presses, textile or woodworking equipment all translate well.
- Solid mechanical sense: you understand why a setup works, not just the steps.
- Organized and consistent. You like a labeled toolbox, a checklist, and a spares shelf that’s never empty.
- Comfortable with hand tools, calipers and micrometers, reading drawings and setup sheets, and using a machine’s control panel.
- On your feet for a full shift, lifting tooling and materials, and working safely around moving equipment.
- Nice to have: brush-industry experience; SMED or lean changeover exposure; preventive-maintenance planning.
Pay: $24.00 - $33.00 per hour
