Position Summary

The Loan Specialist duties perform all responsibilities of loan processing. These areas include both origination of the loan, as well as overseeing servicing/repayment process performed internally as well as by the outside servicer.

Essential Functions

  • Answer all inbound phone calls, emails, faxes and other inquiries concerning loan origination, application process, the online process, and eligibility requirements. Inbound repayment inquiries include processing payments histories, eligibility for postponing payments, resolving outside servicer disputes.
  • Perform all Loan Origination duties to process new loans, edit, finalize, approve/deny, based on pre-determined outlined product-specific criteria, and disburse funds. This includes data entry of all paper application, review/edit for completeness, refer and escalate any needed application or account to management for further review.
  • Perform all repayment/servicing functions for previously disbursed loans. This includes bankruptcy status and OFAC reviews.
  • Teacher Loan Program (TLP) processes to include reviewing all TLP in repayment for forgiveness eligibility, process forgiveness deferment, and follow up with borrowers for any additional information needed.
  • Perform all duties to process BOLD Career Pathway loans. This includes knowledge of eligibility requirements, vetting students, contacting employers, sending employer/student agreements, contacting schools, processing applications and promissory notes, and sending approval disclosures to schools and borrowers.
  • Review daily reports. This includes reviewing and processing all reports from PT and Campus Door systems. Reports will include not only current system generated reports but any reporting function that may be added.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate’s degree in business related field or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • Experience in or knowledge of the student loan industry preferred.

Location and Commitments

SCSLC is located at 1901 Main Street, Suite 400, Columbia, SC 29201. Our standard hours of operation are from 8:00 AM-5:00 PM.

Hybrid Work (Eligible Employees)

  • South Carolina Student Loan Corporation values and supports flexibility provided by a hybrid workplace.
  • Hybrid work arrangements may be used to allow eligible staff members to fulfill some or all of their duties from an off-site location. Home offices are preferred however, alternate secure locations are permitted.
  • As a general practice, employees are expected to report to the office Tuesday through Thursday during standard hours of operation. This will allow for in-person meetings, team collaboration and other scheduled company training and events. On Monday’s and Friday’s employees may work remotely unless they’re requested to be in the office.
  • Hybrid working is a flexible arrangement, so it can be changed, stopped, or started at any point. If stopped, your working pattern will revert back to your regular hours at our physical location.

Working Conditions & Travel

  • Minimum travel is required and is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.
  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment using standard office equipment.
  • Bending, stooping, twisting, and/or walking.
  • Reaching above and/or below the shoulders.
  • Handling/grasping documents or office equipment.
  • Sitting and/or standing for short or extended periods of time.
  • Clear speaking and adequate hearing sufficient to communicate effectively and respond appropriately to internal and external customers, in-person and/or on the telephone.
  • Ability to interpret and mentally process source materials and computer screen data.
  • Repetitive motions for computer equipment use.
  • Exertion of force of 5-10 pounds, continuously to lift/carry/move objects, files, and documents.
