What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Technician position at SC AQUARIUM?
Job Summary:
Responsible for safely conducting general maintenance and repair including plumbing, electrical, mechanical, painting, drywall, and other facilities systems. Takes part in new exhibit design and construction as needed. Assists other maintenance technicians and other departments in various assignments as needed. Required to work weekends, over time where needed, and after normal working hours where needed.
Essential Functions:
- Adhere to the South Carolina Aquarium Policies.
- Troubleshoot, plan, and perform all tasks necessary to modify, dismantle, repair, overhaul and rebuild all types of difficult and complicated mechanical plumbing systems for the building and life support systems. Including fresh and salt water supply, waste water, HVAC, chilled water plant, hot water plant, etc.
- Troubleshoot and repair minor electrical and electronics systems.
- Identify improvement projects and submit plan of action.
- Performs preventative maintenance tasks as needed.
- Able to work flexible hours throughout the week. May be called on after-hours for emergency work.
- Must be able to operate a company vehicle while meeting company insurance eligibility requirements
- Drywall, spackle, and paint throughout the aquarium as needed.
- Maintains outstanding housekeeping standards.
- Maintains workshop equipment properly.
- Capable of using appropriate administrative tools to keep accurate maintenance records.
- Assists internal and external staff as needed.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the mission by participating in Aquarium sponsored programs and events on a regular basis.
- Support Husbandry and Facilities staff in assignments as needed.
- Participation on the Ride Out Team may be required with short notice.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Proficient in all MS Office Products including: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook
- Basic soldering skills.
- Basic Plumbing Skills
- Skilled in Sheetrock finishing and painting.
- Understands proper use of industrial tools and equipment.
- Understands plumbing layouts and design. Conform to all mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection codes.
- Detailed oriented.
- Effective communicator.
Education and Experience Required:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 1 – 2 years of Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, or Carpentry experience.
Licenses & Certifications Required:
- Valid Driver’s License

Physical Requirements:
Requires average walking, standing, bending, stooping, and crouching, climbing ladders, sitting, kneeling, balancing, pushing and pulling, crawling, working with tools, computer tasks and phone usage; should be able to lift/carry at least 50 lbs.; requires driving Aquarium vehicles.
Hazardous Requirements:
Average exposure to minor or severe cuts; falls; falling objects; hazards to eyesight, hearing and sense of smell; and tight spaces. Often requires use of personal protective equipment due to exposure to chemicals, hazardous materials, and ozone.
Working Conditions:
This position requires works in both an office environment and outdoors, sometimes in extreme weather including both hot and cold; requires weekend and late-night work as needed; requires contact with customers, the general public, and outside vendors; requires carrying a cell phone and radio; requires occasional travel.
Salary : $35,000 - $55,000
