Job Description:

Overview: Saydel High School is seeking a dedicated Speech Coach to lead and mentor students in both individual/small group and large group speech competitions. The successful candidate will possess strong communication skills, a passion for speech and debate, and the ability to inspire and motivate students to achieve their full potential. Individual will need to be familiar with Iowa High School Speech Association rules and regulations.

Responsibilities:

1. Coach Development: Provide comprehensive coaching to students participating in individual/small group and large group speech competitions, focusing on various categories such as persuasive speaking, dramatic interpretation, humorous interpretation, storytelling, and debate.
2. Curriculum Development: Develop and implement a structured curriculum to enhance students' speech and communication skills, tailored to individual and group needs.
3. Training Sessions: Conduct regular training sessions to refine students' public speaking techniques, voice projection, articulation, and stage presence.
4. Individualized Feedback: Offer personalized feedback and constructive criticism to students, emphasizing areas for improvement and strategies for enhancement.
5. Competition Preparation: Prepare students for upcoming competitions by organizing mock debates, practice sessions, and simulated competition environments.
6. Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to students, fostering a supportive and encouraging learning environment that promotes growth and development.
7. Team Management: Coordinate team logistics, including scheduling, transportation, and registration for competitions, ensuring efficient and organized participation.
8. Collaboration: Collaborate with school administration, faculty, and parents to promote the speech program and advocate for student participation in speech-related activities.
9. Professional Development: Stay updated on current trends and best practices in speech coaching and competition rules, attending workshops, seminars, and conferences as necessary.
10. Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate records of student progress, competition results, and participation statistics for program evaluation and reporting purposes.

Qualifications:

• Previous coaching experience in speech and debate, preferably at the high school level.
• Strong understanding of speech competition rules, formats, and judging criteria.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to connect and communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
• Dedication to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment that celebrates diversity and promotes teamwork.
• Organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
• Flexibility to accommodate after-school and weekend commitments during the competition season.
• Commitment to upholding ethical standards and promoting sportsmanship among students.
