Position Description:

SOY is an afterschool program serving the needs of the youth on the Westside of Costa Mesa. For over 30 years this nonprofit has provided a safe space for students to be, try new skills and seek the support of mentors to help them get to higher education.

The Student Activities Coordinator will coordinate all activities for students to participant in after school, including SOY’s health, fitness, recreation and sports programs, providing healthy fitness activities for students. The student activities coordinator will also help coordinate the music and arts classes, making sure that they are running and the instructors are there. The primary focus of this position is to coordinate, lead and make sure that students are involved in after-school classes and to supervise the students in these activities. Part of the job will entail leading them in a variety of fitness activities or sports, including soccer and basketball, and to also participate in nature hikes and bike rides to parks and beaches. There are a variety of classes and activities that we offer at SOY, and the student activities coordinator will make sure that the students can sign up for the classes, know what the offerings are and encourage them to try a variety of activities while they are at SOY and are not studying in the academic room. The types of fitness classes to be offered are spin, yoga, Pilates, cross training, circuit training, and zumba, as well as healthy eating workshops and hopefully the activities coordinator will be able to lead some of these classes or find instructors that can. There are also dance classes that are offered by professional teachers , such as Hip-Hop, Jazz, Breakdance and Ballet Folklorico. The coordinator will be in charge of recruiting and coordinating with volunteer instructors, scheduling the classes, recruiting the students, coaching and playing soccer and/or basketball with the youth by organizing outdoor activities like pick-up soccer and basketball games, running, weight training in the outdoor gym and other recreational activities. This position also includes preparing for and taking students on recreational summer camps in our local area to learn to swim, kayak, surf, sail, mountain-bike ride and hike. The coordinator will also help run our annual soccer tournament and recruit students and community members to play.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Lead day-to-day recreational fitness activities at the SOY center.
  • Encourage all students to participate in some sort of recreational fitness or sports activity while at SOY.
  • Make sure all students that enter the center are enrolled in SOY.
  • Supervise students in the center, coordinating with other volunteers and interns to make sure all of the areas of the center are covered and students are safe at all times.
  • Check registration and work with volunteers to make sure all students participating in activities and classes are registered at SOY and interacting safely at the center.
  • Organize planned outdoor activities utilizing the soccer area, basketball court and weight area, as well as the adjoining fields and the SOY bikes.
  • Recruit and coordinate with volunteer instructors to provide fitness classes for our teens.
  • Recruit and coordinate dance instructors to provide a variety of dance classes for our teens and to prepare them for performances.
  • Schedule the times of the classes and prepare fliers for students to sign up for the classes.
  • Oversee other volunteer coaches to help out with sports and to make sure that soccer and basketball courts are utilized at all times.
  • Lead field trips and local monthly hikes.
  • Organize fitness activities in the local area, including the ocean, back bay and local mountains.
  • Coordinate with local groups, including the YMCA, Newport Aquatics, OCC Sailing Base and local businesses like Volcom, among others, to plan summer activities for our students.

Other Duties Include:

  • Overseeing the outdoor equipment and appropriate maintenance
  • Preparing budgets for equipment and transportation to field trips
  • Attend safety training courses
  • Provide instruction to students on proper use of equipment, including spin bikes and weight training equipment
  • Administrative tasks to keep track of classes, schedules, volunteers, and drivers

Requirements:

  • Two to three years experience in high schools or after school programs working with youth.
  • Leadership qualities and exceptional relationship-building skills
  • Experience working with young people and teens in positive environment
  • Ability to encourage the best of each young person, motivating them to try new things, work as a team and strive to do your best
  • Athletic ability, including fitness experience and love of sports and outdoor activities
  • Passion for encouraging youth to exercise and stay fit for their holistic health and to have fun
  • Ability to make frequent changes of routine without loss of composure and to also put the students’ interests first.
  • Adaptability to a variety of situations and an ability to make all feel at ease
  • Coaching experience in a variety of sports or fitness training
  • Good organizational skills and written communication skills
  • Valid Driver’s License and current auto insurance with good driving record required
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent job experience

Status:

  • Part time employee, 25-30 hours a week
  • Location—SOY Center in Costa Mesa, some off site location on weekends
  • Monday—Friday, 3 to 7pm with some weekend hours, (2 to 5 hours)
  • Hourly—$26.00-$28.00/hour (depending on experience)
