Position Overview
The Carpentry Instructor will lead hands-on carpentry and construction training for middle and high school students. This role focuses on teaching practical woodworking, construction fundamentals, tool safety, and craftsmanship while modeling discipline, responsibility, and professionalism. The instructor will play a key role in helping students develop real-world skills that can lead to careers in the skilled trades, entrepreneurship, or further technical education.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach foundational and intermediate carpentry skills, including:
- Measuring, cutting, and assembling materials
- Hand and power tool use and safety
- Basic framing, flooring, and finishing techniques
- Reading simple blueprints and construction plans
- Design and lead project-based learning experiences (e.g., furniture building, campus improvements, small structures)
- Emphasize job-site safety, proper tool handling, and OSHA-aligned best practices
- Supervise students during shop and outdoor build activities
- Instill strong work ethic, accountability, teamwork, and pride in craftsmanship
- Integrate basic math and problem-solving skills into carpentry lessons
- Maintain a safe, organized, and well-managed workshop environment
- Track student progress and provide constructive feedback
- Collaborate with SAVE Institute staff to align vocational training with the school's broader educational and character development goals
Qualifications
Required:
- Demonstrated experience in carpentry, construction, woodworking, or a related skilled trade
- Strong knowledge of hand and power tools and job-site safety practices
- Ability to teach, mentor, and positively engage middle and high school boys
- Commitment to youth development and character-based education
- Reliable, professional, and patient demeanor
Preferred:
- Prior teaching, mentoring, or coaching experience with youth
- OSHA certification or willingness to obtain
- Experience in residential or commercial construction
- Ability to integrate entrepreneurship or job-readiness skills into instruction
- Experience working with underserved or at-risk youth
