Job Summary
The Sheet Metal Fabricator is responsible for fabricating, assembling, and installing various sheet metal products based on detailed technical drawings and blueprints. A key part of the role is producing architectural items, such as custom skylights and metal flashing, using a variety of tools and techniques, including soldering and basic welding. The successful candidate will have proven hands-on experience in the sheet metal trade and a strong commitment to quality and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Blueprint Reading: Interpret complex blueprints, diagrams, and specification sheets to understand and execute project requirements accurately.
- Accurate Measuring: Precisely measure and mark dimensions on metal sheets to ensure cuts and bends comply with required specifications.
- Machine Operation: Operate and set up various sheet metal fabrication equipment, including shears, brakes, and automated cutters, while performing all tasks safely and efficiently.
- Quality Fabrication: Use skills in cutting, bending, and forming to fabricate products such as HVAC ductwork, custom metal flashing, and intricate skylight components.
- Joining Methods: Fasten and seal seams and joints using appropriate techniques, including soldering and basic MIG or TIG welding.
- Workspace Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, which includes proper storage of materials, tools, and equipment.
- Machine Upkeep: Perform routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs on fabrication equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
- Quality Control: Conduct inspections of fabricated parts to verify they meet specified tolerances and are free of defects.
- Material Selection: Choose the correct type, gauge, and finish of sheet metal and other materials based on project requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Proven Experience: Demonstrated hands-on experience in sheet metal fabrication with a portfolio showcasing skylight fabrication, metal flashing, and other sheet metal products.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in operating sheet metal cutting and bending equipment.
- Welding and Soldering: Working knowledge and experience with basic welding (MIG/TIG) and soldering techniques specific to sheet metal.
- Mathematical Skills: Strong arithmetic and geometry skills for accurate measurement and layout.
- Attention to Detail: Exceptional attention to detail to produce high-quality, defect-free products.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods and lift or move materials and equipment.
