Field Operations Technician

Job Description
The Field Operations Technician works closely with the Operations Manager to support tree planting initiatives, manage field logistics, and assist with nursery maintenance. This grant-funded position plays an essential role in delivering activities related to our Canopy Corps workforce development program. This is a hands-on, outdoor position requiring technical skill, leadership ability, and a commitment to environmental sustainability.
Responsibilities
Tree Planting & Field Operations
• Lead and execute STF tree planting events, ensuring proper planting techniques are followed
• Manage tools, materials, and on-site logistics for planting projects
• Direct volunteers, staff, and support crews during planting events
• Track and document tree planting site data for reporting and long-term maintenance
• Provide leadership and technical training for Canopy Corps apprentices, including transportation to/from field sites
Nursery & Site Maintenance
• Assist with operations at the STF Community Nursery, including irrigation repairs, site upkeep, tree care, and support for ongoing development projects
• Perform basic landscaping duties such as mowing, weed control, and tree maintenance
• Operate and maintain trucks, trailers, and tools used for fieldwork
• Ensure nursery equipment, tools, and infrastructure remain in good working order
• Transport trees, supplies, and equipment between planting sites and the nursery
Equipment & Logistics Management
• Collaborate with STF staff, volunteers, and community partners on field projects
• Serve as on-site point of contact, making field decisions as needed
• Maintain a positive, professional attitude while working with diverse groups
Required Qualifications
• Valid Georgia driver’s license
• Ability to routinely lift 50 lbs
• Ability to work safely and efficiently in hot, humid, and rainy conditions
• Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office & Google Suite)
• Ability to pass a background check and drug screening
Desired Qualifications
• Experience in horticulture, landscaping, forestry, or related green industries
• Ability to drive trucks and utility/equipment trailers
• Experience leading teams or supervising support crews
• Strong time-management and decision-making skills in the field
• Willingness to learn nursery operations and basic irrigation repairs
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Compensation & Schedule
• $20.00 per hour (40 hours per week), based on qualifications and experience
• Full-time position with Saturday work required and occasional weeknight events
• Health insurance available within 30 days of hire
• 12 paid vacation days accrued annually
• 13 paid holidays annually, plus office closure during the final week of December
