The Laboratory First Line Manager (FLM) is responsible for the leadership, support, and direct supervision of laboratory personnel ensuring that work is in compliance with Safety, Quality, and Conduct of Operations. Typically reports to and takes direction from the shift manager.
- Supervises the activities of assigned laboratory personnel and ensures those activities are performed safely and in accordance with approved procedures.
- Implements standards, policies, practices and disciplined operations ensuring employees are informed and adhere to rules and regulations.
- Ensures laboratory technicians are trained and qualified for their activities and are physically fit to perform the work.
- Coaches, teaches, mentors, and provides technical and administrative expertise to laboratory technicians. Acts as primary mentor for laboratory technicians (especially in the area of Disciplined Operations).
- Directs emergency operations and leads laboratory personnel in emergency activities.
- Coordinates laboratory work involving production and other support groups.
- Identifies housekeeping and facility material condition deficiencies to the appropriate organization(s) for corrective action.
- Maintains logs and documentation of all laboratory and facility events in accordance with facility operating procedures.
- Identifies equipment issues and understands their impact to continued laboratory operations. Initiates detailed work requests to resolve such issues.
- Plans and schedules laboratory personnel assignments and work/job requests in order to provide the most cost-effective service to the customer.

- Other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Chemistry and laboratory experience; or
- High School Diploma and experience as a trained laboratory technician.
- 3 years’ experience as a salary grade L3 Senior Laboratory Technician meets minimum qualifications.
- Additional selection criteria may apply to external candidates should an open position be filled in that manner. Criteria to be determined at that time.
- Successful completion of facility qualification process which includes extensive classroom and formal on-the-job training.
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Biology preferred
- Mechanical aptitude, computer literacy, and good interpersonal skills needed.
- Good written and communication skills as well as skills in planning, time management, and negotiation
- Practical experience in laboratory techniques and familiarity of laboratory instrumentation in a laboratory setting is very desirable.
