What are the responsibilities and job description for the 2026 Summer Intern-Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning) position at Savannah River Mission Completion?
Provide support to Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) as a Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning) Intern - Limited Service Employee (LSE) on the Savannah River Site (SRS), a US Department of Energy (DOE) facility in Aiken, South Carolina.
The Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning) intern will perform meaningful work in support of the SRMC organization. The selected Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning) intern will assist with various projects related to the SRMC engineering and process systems, such as control systems, process information systems, maintenance, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) etc. The candidate will assist with the following
The internship is expected to be a 10-12 week period from May 2026 until the end of July 2026. Housing is not provided, but reasonable rentals may be available through local university student housing offices. The selected candidate will be responsible for their own transportation.
A 40-hour work week is set and scheduled by the individual departments. SRMC utilizes various work schedules including 5/8s (8 hours/day; five days per week), 4/10s (10 hours/day; four days per week), etc. Each workday has a 30-minute lunch. Interns will be paid a competitive hourly rate; no summer interns will be assigned to shift work; overtime is not available; Interns will be paid for site holidays (Memorial Day, July 4th) as applicable.
Assignments will be located in SRMC facilities in Aiken, SC. Public transportation is not available, and interns will be required to arrange their own transportation. A valid Driver’s License, Registration and proof of automobile insurance is required for driving on the Savannah River Site.
Resumes will be reviewed by the selection panel in January 2026. All selected applicants will be contacted by February or March 2026.

- Collecting and analyzing process data using tools like Excel, PI, databases, etc.
- Evaluating and recommending solutions to improve process efficiency and performance using engineering and technical tools like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), simulators, modeling, etc.
- Documenting and presenting findings and recommendations using tools like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.
- Supporting the system obsolescence review by identifying and assessing the impact of outdated or obsolete components or technologies
- Creating and maintaining dashboards and reports using tools like Power BI, Tableau, Excel, etc.

- Candidate must be enrolled as a full-time student at
- An accredited four-year university, and currently working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent
- Must have completed their Sophomore year
- Must pass General Employment Training (GET)
- Must pass Drug and Alcohol Testing (DAT)
- A cumulative GPA of 2.5
- Knowledge of general concepts of machine learning, such as supervised and unsupervised learning, classification, and regression, etc.
- Basic knowledge of statistical analysis, testing, etc.
- Data visualization skills, such as creating charts, graphs, tables, etc.
- Ability to learn new technologies to include artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and solve problems.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
