CLASS TITLE: INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
Under the general direction of the building Principal and in cooperation with the school staff, assists in the educational program of students, serves as an assistant to teachers in the supervision and instruction of children and in routine clerical and non-instructional duties, and does other work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Under supervision, provides individual or small group learning, and reinforces instruction provided by teacher. May assist in:
• Preparing teaching aids as directed
• Aiding in developing and maintaining classroom environment
• Preparing interest and learning centers
• Assisting in supervision of students during classroom activities, recess, lunch, library work, field trips
• Providing positive reinforcement and general guidance
• Recording evaluation of pupil work
• Operating technological equipment, including computers
• Distributing and collecting papers and supplies
• Performing routine typing tasks
• Performing routine tasks in libraries
• Operating office equipment related to instruction
• Taking attendance and maintaining supply and equipment inventories
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of the general needs and behavior of children. Use of correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and an understanding of basic mathematic operations. Completion of an accredited Instructional Assistant course at a community college or equivalent experience is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILLS:
Establish and maintain effective relationships with students and adults. Understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Knowledge of foreign language when appropriate.
LICENSE & CERTIFICATES: A recent TB skin test examination with negative results.
