Purpose of the Job
Providing assistance in ensuring that the products of Sasol International Chemicals (IC), in accordance with Sasol’s strategy and objectives, can be produced, utilized and marketed without posing any risk to the environment. Initiating and monitoring environmental fate and ecotoxicological studies on IC products.
Key Accountabilities
- Assess the environmental fate and risk of products of Sasol International Chemicals in connection with their development, production, marketing, utilization and disposal and identify and develop strategies to mitigate potential risks
- Initiate and monitor environmental fate and ecotoxicity studies and apply alternative methods (e.g. QSAR, read-across) on products of Sasol International Chemicals
- Monitor, communicate, coordinate responses and provide technical assistance to internal and external Sasol International Chemicals customers on environmental fate and ecotoxicology
- Providing environmental fate expertise in the preparation and submission of global notifications and registrations (including Pre Manufacture Notifications (PMN) in the United States, New Substance Notifications in Canada and REACH registrations in Europe) and different ecolabels for IC products
- Represent Sasol’s interests in national and international industrial associations as well as science, government and industry committees to achieve divisional as well as overall company objectives
- Prepare and exchange information with environmental fate and ecotoxicology experts from academia, government agencies, customers and industry in order to assess the inherent properties of substances with the overall aim of securing Sasol’s market position in accordance with Responsible Care
- Coordinating the utilization of outside consulting services for Product Safety projects
Formal Education
- Doctoral Degree in Environmental Sciences (e.g. Ecotoxicology, Microbiology) with a strong focus on (bio)degradation and environmental fate of chemicals
Working Experience
- 5 years of relevant working experience
Required Personal And Professional Skills
- Basic knowledge of international (especially EU, US) chemical legislation
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
- English at business proficiency level
- Training/presentation skills and experience desirable
- Ability to work independently, ability to work in a team
