About the Role
Reporting directly to the VP of Accounting, the Controller plays a pivotal role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial information, maintaining effective internal controls, and supporting compliance with regulatory standards. You will work cross-functionally with operations, HR, cost control, and project management teams to drive strategic decision-making and ensure financial health across the business.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Analysis
Prepare and review financial statements (income statements, balance sheets, cash flow).
Ensure accurate and timely tax filings and compliance.
Implement and maintain internal controls and risk management procedures.
Financial Planning & Forecasting
Collaborate with the VP Accounting to build budgets, forecasts, and long-term financial plans.
Conduct performance and variance analysis; deliver actionable insights to senior management.
Accounting, Compliance & Governance
Oversee AR/AP, payroll, banking, and general ledger operations.
Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax laws, lien waivers, bonding, and industry-specific standards.
Manage internal and external audits.
Asset Management
Lead cash flow and banking relationship strategies.
Collaborate on inventory control and equipment depreciation.
Provide reports on equipment lifecycle, capital investments, and usage.
Team & Operational Leadership
Lead, mentor, and manage the accounting team.
Promote collaboration between finance and operations.
Drive continuous improvement and performance excellence.
Technology & Systems
Partner with IT to implement and optimize financial systems.
Leverage technology to improve data accuracy and reporting capabilities.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
CPA or CCIFP certification strongly preferred.
Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within construction or heavy civil industries.
Experience with job cost accounting, WIP reporting, and payroll compliance.
Familiarity with employee-owned (ESOP) companies is a plus.
